POL2 308S: Advanced Topicsin Chinese Politics

PURPOSEOF THE COURSE:  TBA

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.     Attendanceat all class meetings, except for illness or other essential absences.

2.     Completionof readings before class. Everyone is expected to do the required readings,which are marked * on the syllabus. Each student is also expected to do somereading of her own choosing from list of recommended readings for each topic.In total, each student should read 100-150 pages per week for this course. Itis expected that students will do different recommended readings, which will,hopefully enliven the discussion.

3.     Thoughtfulparticipation & attention during class.

4.     Keepingup with current events in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan). The NewYork Times doesa pretty good job covering China. For suggestion about other sources on currentevents in China, see: http://www.wellesley.edu/Polisci/wj/China/chinalinks.html.Ten or fifteen minutes at the start of each class will be spent talking aboutcurrent events. Students will take turns leading this part of the course andare expected to post an article or link to an article about a current event onthe course conference no later than 4pm on the day before the seminar.

5.     Taking responsibility for sharing leadership of the weeklydiscussion, or part of it, one or more times during the semester.

6.     Three 3-5 page response papers/critical memos/reviews on weeklytopics & readings.  A draft ofthe paper is due no later than the day of the topic being considered since onepurpose of these papers is also to enhance the quality of the discussion. Youmay revise your paper after the class meeting and submit it again by 4pm on thefollowing Friday. You must do at least one paper for Part I of the course(Frameworks and Facts).

7.     A research paper (15-20 pages) on a topic to be chosen inconsultation with the instructor due by 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 20th. A one page statement ofyour paper topic and a preliminary bibliography are due no later than Friday,April 22nd.

 

Thecourse grade will be based roughly on the following:

 

¥        Attendance,Participation, Attentiveness, Preparation, and Presentations: 30%

¥        ShortPapers: 10% each; 30% total

¥        ResearchPaper: 40%
