NANKING: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
.The Nanking Atrocities: Fact and Fable (HATA Ikuhiko)
Iris Chang has created a sensation in the United States with her book The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II. Chang estimates that 260,000-350,000 people were killied in the atrocities after the city's fall in 1937. Many Japanese scholars accept similar figures. But the numerical count has been inflated by faulty methodology; a count of 40,000-60,000 seems more reasonable. Chang's book is also flawed by its use of photographs that have been misleadingly cropped or totally miscaptioned. Similar trickery with wartime photos is unfortunately widespread in Japan also.
