I received my Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where I studied gender differences in interaction and influence. I've published and presented papers on the effects of gender on group interaction, communication and influence; leadership; and reactions to adversity and victimization. My research currently focuses on women's leadership, particularly the obstacles that women leaders face and ways to overcome those obstacles. I recently co-authored a book on women's leadership with Alice Eagly, "Through the labyrinth: The truth about how women become leaders," which was published this fall. I joined the faculty at Wellesley in 1991. I teach a variety of courses, including organizational psychology, the psychology of law, and research in applied psychology. I'm active in professional organizations in psychology and management and serve on the Executive Board of the Association of Women in Psychology. In addition to my teaching and research, I've developed and conducted diversity training workshops and negotiation and conflict resolution workshops for women leaders and have lectured on gender and diversity for business, academic and other organizations.
