Convocation Speeches

President Diana Chapman Walsh
"The most influential factor in Wellesley’s future is going to be high-velocity change – change that will cause disjunctions in the technical, economic, social, ecological, and moral contexts in which all of us live our lives. This means that the prime task of education (now perhaps more than ever) will be to enhance our students’ ability to see with new eyes."

Dean of the College Andrew Shennan
"As a result of the work done last year by the 2015 Commission, I do believe we have an opportunity – a real opportunity – to take stock and to have an informed, wide-ranging conversation about how the college has changed over the past decade and where we might head during the next decade."

College Government President Emily Oxford '07
"We are at Wellesley because of each other.... We are not here because of our library’s plethora of resources, and we’re not here to only do scientific research. Yes, we are thankful for the many academic opportunities at Wellesley and we do pride ourselves on the consistent quality of our work, but Wellesley is not the only place to receive an education. But, it is the only place to be nurtured and challenged by Wellesley women...."

Closing remarks by Pashington Obeng, assistant professor of Africana Studies

Step out into the dancing rhythms of the future
May the beauty, grace and power of this moment lift you
Up to become bearers of hope, love and justice
To speak up with courage and
learn to be silent where silence purifies language
And stills the soul.
Be committed to what matters most while
Knowing what matters least. Embrace your
Curiosity with humility, boldness and honesty
Be open to the gifts of surprise from those
Who stand in solidarity with you.
As you forge your future together, be mindful that in times of anguish and of joy, moments of failure and of success, your worth does not depend on any of these, but on the love you give and receive.
May you be carried gently into circles of fellowship where none feels too small to contribute nor too powerful to benefit from the lasting bond that keeps you together.
Dance your rhythms into the lasting rhythms of the days ahead.
