Dedication of the new athletic fields, October 2002

On Friday, October 25, Wellesley College dedicated four new athletic fields and a track, marking the end of the college's environmental clean-up of more than 30 acres of land. President Diana Chapman Walsh was joined by members of the college's Board of Trustees, representatives of state governmental agencies, and local public officials for the brief ceremony, which was followed by a walking tour of the area. After the ceremony, the path around Lake Waban, including a boardwalk over the reconstructed wetlands, was reopened for the first time since construction began 19 months ago.

Wearing a Wellesley College Athletics cap, President Diana Chapman Walsh spoke to members of the board of trustees, governmental officials, project team members, and assembled guests at the dedication of the new athletic fields. The photo on the right shows the reconstructed southern wetlands and Lower Waban Brook flowing into Lake Waban. The college boathouse can be seen in the distance.

The photo on the left shows the reconstructed walking path heading west through the southern wetlands. One of the project team members gave a tour of the site to trustees and guests, pausing on the restored historic dam at the southern end of Paintshop Pond. The college boathouse is visible in the distance.
