Judith Black

Judith Black is a professor of Photography in the Art Department at Wellesley College. A member of the faculty since 1990, Professor Black teaches courses in many areas of still photography. Her own research and work examine the self and family in the genre of family portraiture. Primarily, her work has centered on black and white large format portraiture of her immediate and extended family.

Professor Black received a B.F.A. degree from Quincy College, Quincy, IL in 1967, with a concentration in visual arts. She earned an M.S. in Visual Studies at M.I.T. in 1982. She was employed at a commercial photographic lab for several years before working at the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Science lab at Brandeis University as a scientific photographer for 8 years. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship during this time, which enabled her to pursue her own work documenting her family.

Professor Blackšs work has been included in numerous national and international exhibitions and publications over the past 20 years. It is included in museum collections nationally, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Polaroid International Collection, the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art.
