Judith C. Brown

Judy Brown was born in Teague, Texas, and is Professor of Physics Emerita at Wellesley College. She holds the position of Visiting Scientist at the MIT Media Lab. She received her B.A. from Rice University and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Brown's general interest is in machine perception of acoustic signals such as music and animals vocalizations. The goal is to determine to what extent the information contained in these sounds and in musical scores is accessible by computer.

Brown's research projects have included pitch perception of frequency modulated signals by skilled musical performers, harmonicity of musical instruments, accuracy of frequency estimates using the phase vocoder, musical instrument identification, trill rates using Independent Component Analysis, and contour analysis of whale vocalizations. Most recently she has worked on automatic classification of killer whale vocalizations using the techniques of Dynamic Time Warping and Hidden Markov Models.
