John Cameron

John CameronJohn Cameron has been a member of the Wellesley faculty since 1984 and is currently professor of biological sciences. He previously served as department chair (1991-94) and as academic director of the Science Center (1995-99). He was awarded the 2007 Anna and Samuel Pinanski Teaching Prize for excellence in teaching.

His research focuses on the cardiovascular physiology of ectothermic ('cold-blooded') vertebrate animals; in particular, he is interested in the ionic and genetic mechanisms that promote tolerance of low-oxygen and low temperature conditions in vertebrates ectotherms, especially fishes. His work has been supported by multi-year grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. Professional affiliations include the American Physiological Society, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Wellesley College Chapter of Sigma Xi.

Cameron received a B.S. in biology from College of William and Mary and an M.S. and Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Before coming to Wellesley, he was a faculty member at the University of Miami School of Medicine and an NIH postdoctoral research fellow at Albany Medical College.

John and his wife Naomi are residents of Wellesley and are the parents of two sons, Jeffrey and Stephen.
