Scott Gunther
Scott Gunther is Assistant Professor of French at Wellesley College. He received his B.A. from Cornell in 1990 where he majored in Philosophy, his J.D. from the NYU School of Law in 1993, his D.E.A. in Sciences sociales from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1995, and his Ph.D. in French Studies from NYU in 2001.
Dr. Gunther is a specialist of contemporary French culture and society. He teaches from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, relying on the contributions of disciplines as diverse as law, gender and sexuality studies, anthropology, history, sociology, and cultural studies. His research interests include the mass media, gender and sexuality, Franco-American relations, Franco-German relations, France and the European Union and comparative (French/American) law. Dr. Gunther's book, The Elastic Closet: A History of Homosexuality in France, 1942-present (Palgrave, 2009) examines gay politics in contemporary France with a focus on the complex relationship between French republican values and the possibilities they offer for social change.
