Dennis M. Smith

Dennis M. Smith taught at Wellesley College as a Professor of Biological Sciences at Wellesley College for 27 years in courses on histology, microscopic anatomy of mammals, introductory biology, and biotechnology for non-science majors.

He joined the Wellesley faculty in 1980, after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Tufts University Medical School. He received both the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Loyola University of Chicago, in 1974 and 1979, respectively.

His research focuses on the structure and function of the mammalian lung, with particular emphasis on the effects of a certain class of drugs known collectively as beta-blockers. His research has been funded by the Brachman-Hoffman fund, the Research Corporation and the National Institutes of Health. He has directed the summer research program in biology at Wellesley and has been the principal investigator on the National Science Foundation grant that partially funds it.

In 1980 he married Professor Sally Sommers Smith of Boston University and has a son.
