Margery Sabin

Margery Sabin is Lorraine Chiu Wang Professor of English and Co-Director of the South Asia Studies program at Wellesley College. A specialist in comparative literature, Ms. Sabin first joined the Wellesley faculty in 1966.

Ms. Sabin received both the A.B. and M.A. degrees from Radcliffe College in 1960 and 1961, respectively. She received the Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1966.

Ms. Sabin is the author of The Dialect of the Tribe: Speech and Community in Modern Fiction (Oxford University Press, 1987), English Romanticism and the French Tradition (Harvard University Press, 1976), and Dissenters and Mavericks: Writings about India in English, 1760-2000 (Oxford University Press, 2002). Her articles and reviews have appeared in such critical and scholarly journals as Raritan Quarterly, Essays in Criticism, Journal of Comparative Literature, Philological Quarterly, and Prose Studies. She has been the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, as well as fellowships from the Bunting Institute (Radcliffe), the American Association of University Women, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ms. Sabin teaches in the Bread Loaf School of English, a summer school M.A. Program, mainly for high school teachers. She has been on the teaching staff of "Humanities and the Professions," a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities which teaches literature to professionals in the fields of law, education, and other human services. She has recently been lecturing and writing on the place of literature in interdisciplinary study, an interest developed through her experimental teaching and research in the areas of postcolonial studies and Victorian social history.

At Wellesley, Ms. Sabin has served on the Presidential Advisory Committee, the Financial Aid Committee, the Board of Appeals, the Graduate Fellowship Committee, and Committee for Educational Research and Development. From 1981-1983, she served as Dean of the Class of 1983, and was Chair of the English Department from 1984 to 1987. At the 1984 Commencement exercises, Ms. Sabin was the recipient of the Pinanski Prize, awarded for excellence in teaching.

Margery Sabin resides in Wellesley, Massachusetts with her husband, Dr. James Sabin.
