Steven Schiavo

Professor of Psychology Steven Schiavo has been a member of the Wellesley College faculty since 1969. He served as director of the Science Center and as chair of the Department of Psychology.

Dr. Schiavo received his B.A. degree magna cum laude from Lehigh University and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received the Ph.D. degree from Columbia University and in 1995 was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

A specialist in social psychology, he has done research on the family and its use of time and space, analyzing how family members' relationships are effected by these variables. The recipient of a Brachman Hoffman Research Fellowship for his recent studies on children's and adolescents' activities and feelings about homes and neighborhoods, he has also received funding from the Edith Barenholtz Child Study Program for an examination of children's social relationships and how preschoolers teach each other. His findings in children's use of space in the home were published in Children's Environments Quarterly, Winter 1987.

In 1991 Dr. Schiavo became President of the New England Psychological Association, one of seven regional associations within the American Psychological Association.

Professor Schiavo has also been the recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for research on family interaction which he conducted at the University of Utah. He has also received several research grants from Wellesley College.

A frequent participant in professional meetings, he has presented papers to the American Psychological Association, Environmental Design and Research Association, National Council on Family Relations and Eastern Psychological Association. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Personality, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Recipient of the distinguished Massachusetts Psychological Association's Teacher of the Year Award, he has also served as a member and as Chair of the American Psychological Association's Committee on Undergraduate Education.

At Wellesley, Dr. Schiavo has served on the Curriculum Committee and Board of Overseers of the Stone Center. In addition, he has served on the Board of Admissions, the Wellesley Chapters of the American Association of University Professors and Phi Beta Kappa and has participated in many panels for the Wellesley Alumnae Council and the Board of Admissions.

Dr. Schiavo, his wife Evelyn, and their two sons live in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
