Vernon
Shetley
Vernon Shetley is Professor of English at Wellesley College.
A member of the faculty since 1984, he teaches courses on American
literature, film, and literary theory.
Professor Shetley received his B.A. degree from Princeton in 1978,
and Ph.D. from Columbia in 1986. He has been a Rockefeller Scholar-in-Residence
at the Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y (1987–88) and an
Andrew Mellon Junior Faculty Fellow at Harvard University (1990–91).
Professor Shetley's book, After the Death of Poetry (Duke University
Press, 1993), treats the relationship between poet and audience
in postwar America. His current research focuses on American film
noir, and on the implications of cognitive science for the humanities.
He has also published on dance, film theory, and 19th century American
poetry.
