FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WELLESLEY COLLEGE STUDENT WINS 1996 BRITISH MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP

Wellesley College senior Jennifer McCollum Saunders of Parsons, Kansas, has won a 1996 British Marshall Scholarship to study at Oxford University in Britain next year. British Ambassador to the United States Sir John Kerr KCMG on Dec. 12 announced the 40 American college and university seniors selected from among 800 candidates.

Ms. Saunders, daughter of Muriel and Richard Saunders, is majoring in economics and political science at Wellesley College. She plans to study politics at Oxford where during her junior year she studied in the Politics, Philosophy and Economics program at Mansfield College. Returning to Oxford, she will pursue a Master of Philosophy in politics, in preparation for a career in human rights and public service.

The Marshall Scholarship Program is funded by the British Government. It was established in 1953 as an expression of gratitude to the American people for aid received under the European Recovery Program instituted by General George Marshall in 1947. The scholarships, which cover all costs for two or three years' study at a British university of the scholar's choice, are administered by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. In addition to intellectual distinction, Marshall selectors seek individuals with the potential to become leaders in their field and contribute to society.

Past British Marshall Scholars include Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer; U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt; philosopher Michelle Moody-Adams, a 1977 graduate of Wellesley College; and former Wellesley College President Nannerl Overholser Keohane, a 1961 graduate of Wellesley College and currently president of Duke University.

At Wellesley College, Jennifer Saunders received the history department's Barnette Miller Essay Prize during her sophomore year. This fall, she interned in the office of U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-Mass). She also serves on the board of the college's Shakespeare Society, a theatre group for which she has acted in and designed costumes for four productions.

Jennifer Saunders graduated from Parsons (Kansas) Senior High School in 1992.
