Wellesley College Students Win Rhodes
Scholarships
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wellesley College seniors Laura A. Tavares and Julie H.
Levison have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships. The Rhodes
Scholarships were established in 1904 by the estate of Cecil
Rhodes and provide American students the opportunity to
attend Oxford University in England. It was not until 1976
that women were eligible to apply for the Rhodes, and since
that time seven Wellesley students have won the scholarship.
Laura Tavares is a resident of East Falmouth,
Massachusetts and a 1994 graduate of Falmouth Academy. A
religion major at Wellesley, Ms. Tavares plans to use her
Rhodes Scholarship to undertake an in-depth study of
Christian history and theology at Oxford. At Wellesley
Ms.Tavares has achieved academic honors including the First
Year Student Academic Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa. In the
Spring of 1997, she studied at the School for International
Training in Quito, Ecuador, where she conducted independent
fieldwork on indigenous religious rituals and taught English
in a local school. She serves as a student representative to
the Board of Trustees and is a member and Literary Chair of
the Zeta Alpha Literary Society on campus. Ms. Tavares'
future plans include pursuing a Ph.D. in religion and
becoming a college professor.
Julie Levison is a resident of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
and a 1994 graduate of Friends' Central School in Wynnewood,
Pennsylvania. A history major, Ms. Levison will study the
history of medicine at Oxford, specializing in social
responses to modern epidemics. She plans to be a doctor. At
Wellesley she received a First Year Academic Distinction,
was awarded a summer fellowship to study tumor immunology at
the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, and co-authored a
book, Magic Sites: Women Travelers to the Americas,
an anthology of women's travel journals. Ms. Levison served
as a student board member of the Wellesley Center for
Research on Women and was a student representative to the
College's Board of Trustees. She has also run the Boston
Marathon.
