FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 12, 1997

Wellesley College seniors Laura A. Tavares and Julie H. Levison have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships. The Rhodes Scholarships were established in 1904 by the estate of Cecil Rhodes and provide American students the opportunity to attend Oxford University in England. It was not until 1976 that women were eligible to apply for the Rhodes, and since that time seven Wellesley students have won the scholarship.

Laura Tavares is a resident of East Falmouth, Massachusetts and a 1994 graduate of Falmouth Academy. A religion major at Wellesley, Ms. Tavares plans to use her Rhodes Scholarship to undertake an in-depth study of Christian history and theology at Oxford. At Wellesley Ms.Tavares has achieved academic honors including the First Year Student Academic Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa. In the Spring of 1997, she studied at the School for International Training in Quito, Ecuador, where she conducted independent fieldwork on indigenous religious rituals and taught English in a local school. She serves as a student representative to the Board of Trustees and is a member and Literary Chair of the Zeta Alpha Literary Society on campus. Ms. Tavares' future plans include pursuing a Ph.D. in religion and becoming a college professor.

Julie Levison is a resident of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and a 1994 graduate of Friends' Central School in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. A history major, Ms. Levison will study the history of medicine at Oxford, specializing in social responses to modern epidemics. She plans to be a doctor. At Wellesley she received a First Year Academic Distinction, was awarded a summer fellowship to study tumor immunology at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, and co-authored a book, Magic Sites: Women Travelers to the Americas, an anthology of women's travel journals. Ms. Levison served as a student board member of the Wellesley Center for Research on Women and was a student representative to the College's Board of Trustees. She has also run the Boston Marathon.
