TENNIS-PLAYING, ECONOMICS MAJOR IS WINNER OF
103rd ANNUAL HOOP-ROLLING CONTEST
Wellesley, MA -- An economics major from
Unterwössen, Germany, is the winner of this morning's
103rd annual hoop-rolling competition at Wellesley College.
Kat Pick, who is also the No. 2 singles player on the
College tennis team, was met at the finish line by Wellesley
College President Diana Chapman Walsh. Walsh, herself the
winner of the 1966 hoop-rolling contest, presented Pick with
a bouquet of purple flowers, the Class of 1998's color.
In keeping with tradition, Pick was promptly carried by
her classmates to the edge of Lake Waban and, dressed in her
academic gown, was tossed into the lake.
Upon emerging from the lake, Pick gave some credit for
her victory to her friend and teammate, Erika Willacy, '99,
who arrived at the starting line at 5:30 a.m. to save a
prime spot for her friend.
Traditionally, the hoop-rolling winner was said to be the
first in her class to marry. These days, victory is seen as
a sign that the winner will be the first to achieve her
personal goals, whatever they may be. After graduation later
this month, Pick will be working at the Harvard Business
School.
