WELLESLEY GRADUATE RECEIVES
OPRAH WINFREY AWARD FOR VOLUNTEERISM
TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL COUNSELING
TO THE POOR
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Recent Wellesley College
graduate Eva-Dina Delgado is the 1999 recipient of the Oprah
Winfrey Award for Volunteerism that provides a stipend for a
summer internship with a not-for-profit organization. A 1999
graduate who majored in international relations, Delgado
will be working for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service
of South Texas to help low-income individuals, especially
recent high school graduates, take charge of their finances.
By empowering individuals, she hopes to have a positive
impact on the Rio Grande Valley community.
"Because the Consumer Credit Counseling Service believes
that learning how to handle money wisely is as important as
learning how to read, the Agency has developed programs to
educate consumers on how credit works and how to budget to
become financially responsible," Delgado wrote in her
application essay. "I see financial management as a skill
necessary for success, and the community at large receives
poor education in the world of finance."
The Wellesley College internship award was established in
1998 by Sally Needles Toffey '55, in recognition of the
important connection between Oprah Winfrey's Commencement
visit to Wellesley in 1997 and the College's motto "Not to
be ministered unto, but to minister." During her
Commencement
address, Ms. Winfrey challenged each graduate to "create
the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because
you become what you believe."
Wellesley College is a prominent liberal arts college and
has been a leader in the education of women for nearly 125
years. The College's 500-acre campus near Boston is home to
about 2,300 undergraduate students. Wellesley's
distinguished alumnae include First Lady Hillary Rodham
Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, Madame
Chiang Kai-shek, and broadcast journalists Cokie Roberts,
Diane Sawyer, and Lynn Sherr.
