WELLESLEY,
Mass. -- Wellesley College will host a public information
session for area residents to learn about the college's
plans to cleanup the Paintshop Pond site. The session will
be held Wednesday, March 21, from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Great
Hall of the Wellesley Town Hall. Local residents are invited
to view display boards that detail the project, ask questions
of members of project team, and look at a model of the current
area and how it will look when the project is completed.
The
site is located on the western border of the campus, south
of Route 135. It was acquired by the College in 1932 and
maintained as open space. In the mid-1970s, with the advent
of regulatory policies and greater environmental awareness,
the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
notified the College that it had identified soils contaminated
with paint pigments on and around the site of the former
factory (which began operations in 1848 and continued for
nearly 80 years).
The
cleanup of the site is scheduled to begin in the next few
weeks. Two weeks ago, the college posted signs on the path
around Lake Waban notifying the campus and visitors that
a portion of the path will be temporarily closed during
the cleanup project. Beginning in late March, a segment
of the path, from the boathouse west about a 1/4 mile, will
be closed until the project is completed in the late spring
of 2002. Anyone with questions about the project should
call 781-283-2788 or click
here to visit the Paintshop Pond web site.
