WELLESLEY,
Mass. -- Wellesley College sophomore Rosa Fernández
of the Bronx, N.Y., who contributed a chapter to a 2004
book, Letters to the Next President: What We Can
Do About the Real Crisis in Public Education, has been
selected to participate in the nation's most prestigious
Hispanic internship program by the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation's leading Hispanic
nonprofit and nonpartisan educational organization.
For more on Fernández's book, published by Columbia's
Teachers College in February, go to www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Releases/2004/011404.html
The CHCI Congressional Summer Internship selects 30
outstanding Latino undergraduates from across the country
to spend eight weeks in Washington, D.C., providing
them with a “behind the scenes” look at
how the U.S. government functions. While in Washington,
Fernández, who is majoring in international relations
at Wellesley, will work in the office of Congressman
Donald Payne (D-N.J.) while benefiting from the program’s
emphasis on leadership development, work experience,
community service and learning.
“History has shown that as a CHCI program participant,
Rosa will be an agent for change in America by emerging
into leadership capacities where Hispanics are rarely
seen,” says Ingrid M. Duran, CHCI president and
CEO. “As one of 30 of the most promising young
Hispanic leaders in the U.S., Rosa will continue a national
trend of increased Latino leadership for all of America.”
At the office of Congressman Payne, Fernández
will work on constituent communications, monitor hearings,
conduct legislative research and assist with general
office operations. Fernández’s work experience
will be enhanced by weekly leadership developmental
sessions, during which the intern will meet with national
leaders and discuss current policy matters.
Since 1875, Wellesley College has been a leader in providing
an excellent liberal-arts education for women who will
make a difference in the world. Its 500-acre campus
near Boston is home to 2,300 undergraduate students
from all 50 states and 68 countries. For more information,
