Wellesley College Will Present Alumnae Achievement Awards Feb. 25

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College Alumnae Association will hold its 35th annual Alumnae Achievement Awards Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 pm in Alumnae Hall. The ceremony will honor former Italian Parliament member Carole Beebe Tarantelli, class of 1964, magazine editor Ellen Jacobson Levine, class of 1964, and business leader Lois Juliber, class of 1971.

Carole Beebe Tarantelli is an educator, psychoanalyst, former member of the Italian Parliament, antiterrorist activist, and women’s rights advocate. In 1987, two years after her husband was assassinated by the Red Brigades, she accepted an invitation to run for the Italian Parliament and won by an ample margin, becoming the first American citizen ever elected to the legislature. While in office, she concentrated on women’s issues, including rape legislation, domestic violence, abortion rights, and family leave, as well as prison reform and health-care reform. She was instrumental in the founding of Differenza Donna, Italy’s first shelter for battered women, and in the effort to reform the country’s rape laws, ensuring that rape would be punishable as a serious crime in Italy.

Ellen Jacobson Levine made publishing history when she became the first woman to be named editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping since the magazine was founded in 1885. Before her appointment to the top post at the flagship publication of Hearst Magazines, she served as editor-in-chief of two other major women’s magazines: Redbook (1990-1994) and Women’s Day (1982-1990). She was also senior editor of Cosmopolitan from 1976-1982. In January 2004, she was inducted into the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame by the American Society of Magazine Editors and the Magazine Publishers of America. She serves on the board of the New York Restoration Project; the board of advisors of New York Women in Communications; the board of directors for Gaylord Entertainment and Finlay Enterprises Inc.; and the board of directors of Lifetime Television. She is also an editorial consultant for O, The Oprah Magazine.

Lois Juliber, a highly regarded business leader, is vice chairman of Colgate-Palmolive. In her 17 years with Colgate-Palmolive, she has been central to the successes of the company’s Latin America, Far East/Canada, North America and Europe divisions. She supervised Colgate’s entry into China and led a resurgence of Colgate North America, developing a series of successful new products and dramatically increasing product growth. Prior to joining Colgate, she was vice president of General Foods Corp., where she managed brands such as Kool Aid and Post Cereals. In addition to her work at Colgate-Palmolive, she is a member of the board of directors of DuPont Corp. and Goldman Sachs, a trustee of Wellesley College and a director of the Harvard Business School Club of New York and Girls Inc.

Wellesley’s Alumnae Achievement Award is the highest honor given to alumnae for excellence and distinction in their fields of endeavor and has been presented annually since 1970.
