fall theatre season opens with musical comedy Wellesley College Upstage opens its '00-'01 season with the production of The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 by John Bishop. This comedic romp makes fun of both murder mysteries and the quintessential 40's musical. Secret passageways, secret agents, WWII, mysterious men in black, dead bodies falling out of closets, twins . . .wait, no, triplets?! This show is entirely student produced, headed by director Elizabeth Hedstrom '01, stage manager Megan Adair '01 and producer Christine Phillips '03. They are aided by more than 20 Wellesley students. The show will be performed in the Ruth Nagel Jones Theatre October 26 at 7 pm, October 27 & 28 at 8 pm and October 28 & 29 at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $6 for general admission; $3 for Wellesley faculty/staff, students, and seniors; and, as always, free for Wellesley/MIT students with ID as well as children under the age of 12. in the wings- Opening November 8 will be the New England premiere of the musical Joan of Arc with book and lyrics by award-winning Boston playwright, Laura Harrington, and music by Tony Award nominated composer Mel Marvin. Joan of Arc sets the drama of the young French martyr to a sweeping score, following her through the course of her history. In her demise at the hands of religious zealots who see her as a threat to the young King of France, we are reminded of the tragic timelessness of bigotry. Nora Hussey, director of Theatre Studies at Wellesley, is directing the production.
multilingual halloween soiree of horror performances Lights are out in the cavernous gothic living room. Illumination comes only from a roaring fire, a few candles. Silence. Now . . . let the ghoulish, macabre readings begin . . . The eighth annual "Readings in Horror: An International Halloween Soirée " will take place on the evening of Monday, October 30. All who dare are welcome to attend. Begun by Professors Tom Hodge of the Russian Department and Thomas Nolden of the German Department, the annual sampling of scary selections from around the world is performed by Wellesley faculty and students. "This event is always lots of fun, and a ghoulish good time is had by all," says organizer Hodge. This year's offerings include excerpts from works by Aleksandr Pushkin, the Brothers Grimm, Japanese folklore, Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Spanish literature and much more. Refreshments- blood-curdling cookies and cider-complete the evening. The location was not finalized by the time this issue went to print; it will be included in next week's calendar section.
Renovations are underway to convert Acorns House, a former residence behind Clapp Library, into office space for some administrative staff. The building will be the new home for Vice President Will Reed, Catherine Feddersen, chief investment officer and associate treasurer, and several members of the Finance Department staff who have been located in leased office space in downtown Wellesley. Infrastructure improvements to Acorns include new heating and cooling systems and added wiring for telephone, computer, and electrical needs. The four bedrooms are being converted into offices, and the living room will be used for open office space. The work is expected to be complete at the end of October, with the new "residents" slated to move in soon thereafter.
Last issue noted that the poet Robert Pinsky recently spoke on campus. He is both former US poet laureate and a former Wellesley College professor. We neglected to mention that he now teaches at Boston University.
triple helix returns to campus after successful summer The Triple Helix piano trio-whose dynamic lecture-performances cut across academic disciplines and give new meaning to the word "concert"-have begun a second year as artists-in-residence at Wellesley after a busy summer. Following several local performances, Lois Shapiro, piano, Bayla Keyes, violin, and Rhonda Rider, cello, were artists-in-residence at the Monadnock Music Festival in New Hampshire where their concerts featured two works by Arlene Zallman, their colleague in the Wellesley Music Department. Their concert at the Clark Art Institute received a standing ovation and was called "tantalizingly alive" by The Berkshire Eagle. In August, the trio was one of five ensembles nationwide to receive the Chamber Music America Commissioning Award, a prestigious prize that supports the commission of a new work especially for them. Lee Hyla, prize-winning composer and head of the composition department at the New England Conservatory of Music, will compose the new piece. A performance with John Rhodes of the Art Department led off Triple Helix's fall schedule on campus in October. The trio works in close collaboration with faculty in different departments- for example, art, music, and English- to develop programs that enhance class curricula. Two more lecture/performances are scheduled for November: "Music that Shaped the American Avant-garde," on November 21, in conjunction with the "Cold War Modern" exhibit at the Davis Museum and Cultural Center; and "The Emerging Self and Its Impact on Art, Music and Aesthetics in 19th Century Western Europe," on November 29. Lecture/ performances for classes are open to the public.
family weekend 2000 is october 27 through 29 Hundreds of parents and other family members will be on campus for Family Weekend, set for Friday through Sunday, October 27-29. wendy bauer, priscilla benson, and dick french, astronomy, were interviewed by local Boston television stations about alumna Pamela Melroy's first foray into space as pilot of the shuttle Discovery. Along with their colleagues jeff regester, astronomy, and tom bauer, physics, Bauer and French travelled to Florida to watch the launch but had to return to campus after several launch delays. Both Bauer and French taught Melroy during her undergraduate years at Wellesley. tracy gleason, psychology, was featured in a recent article in The Boston Globe on the role of imaginary friends in young children's lives. Gleason studies the ways that children talk about and interact with pretend friends and how these relationships help young children understand, think about, and develop other types of social relationships.
