college receives $14 million commitment for global education and landscape priorities

Wellesley recently has been given a pledge of $14 million to strengthen its global education initiatives and to restore part of the campus landscape. The commitment, announced by President Diana Chapman Walsh at the kick-off event for The Wellesley Campaign, is from the Shelby Cullom Davis Foundation in honor of Kathryn Wasserman Davis, an alumna of the class of 1928, a trustee, and a long-time supporter of the College.

The Davis Foundation's most recent pledge augments its 1998 commitment of $11 million to support international scholarship and research, bringing the foundation's total campaign commitment to $25 million.

Four million dollars of the commitment will be used to establish an endowment fund for global education initiatives, with an emphasis on support for international internships and on financial aid for study abroad. Five million dollars will be designated for the construction of a parking facility, to be located in the vicinity of the Davis Museum and Cultural Center. The additional five million dollars will be used for landscape restoration in the area adjacent to the proposed parking facility and the museum.

This is the second $25 million commitment to The Wellesley Campaign. The other gift, announced last April, is from Lulu Chow Wang,'66, and Tony Wang for the construction of a new campus center. Campaign gifts and pledges to date total $184.2 million towards the overall $400 million goal.

junior show is one of many highlights of fall weekend

The Class of 2002 will have a chance to shine next weekend when it puts on Junior Show, a Wellesley tradition since 1936 in which members of the junior class write, produce, and perform a musical comedy. Although the plot is kept secret until opening night (Nov. 17), the show revolves around --a rooming crunch, friendship, and shared memories of Wellesley.--

Junior Show is one of many highlights of this year's Fall Weekend, which runs from Thursday, November 16, through Sunday the 19th. Sponsored by the Schneider Board of Governors and modeled after Spring Weekend, Fall Weekend offers many chances for students to come together to celebrate.

The theme for the weekend is "If We Took a Holiday," with each day having a theme from a Madonna song. "Who's that Girl?" Thursday will start the weekend with performances in Schneider by two comedians. "Music" is the theme for Friday, with an after-Junior-Show party featuring the music of a band led by recent Wellesley grad Becky Warren '00.

"Dress You Up in My Love" is the theme for Saturday, with the annual fall gala to be held in the Alumnae Hall Ballroom after a performance by the Wellesley College Dancers.

The weekend concludes on "Express Yourself" Sunday with programming by several organizations of Multicultural Council. The dance, food, and other performances will take place in the Tower Court complex.

the wen ho lee case explored

Elizabeth OuYang, a lawyer, activist, and adjunct instructor in Asian and Pacific American Studies at New York University will deliver a lecture titled "Racial Profiling and the Case of Wen Ho Lee" on Monday, Nov. 13, 2000 at 4:15 p.m. in the Clapp Library Lecture Room.

The talk is being sponsored by Professor T. James Kodera, Religion, but it is also a topic very close to the heart of Professor Charles Bu, Mathematics. Bu, who is Chinese-American, wrote an op-ed article, "Lee Case smashes students' dreams," in the September 23, issue of the Boston Herald. In it, Bu argued that over the past decade, the political climate in the US has chilled toward the contributions of Chinese-American scientists and that, "[t]he Lee case is a product of such xenophobic paranoia." popular "authors on stage" event supports library

Writers Henry Allen, Catherine Clinton, and Dennis Overbye are the stars of this year's "Authors on Stage" event Tuesday, November 14 at The College Club. This sold-out program is being sponsored by the Wellesley College Alumnae Club of Boston for the benefit of the Wellesley College Library. In the last 18 years, the group has contributed more than $55,000 to the Library Book Fund.

Henry Allen, veteran feature writer and editor at The Washington Post, has recently released What it Felt Like: Living in the American Century (Pantheon Books, 2000). Allen gives a vivid and captivating evocation of the social, cultural, and spiritual tenor of the twentieth century, decade by decade.

Catherine Clinton's most recent work on the nineteenth century American South is Fanny Kemble's Civil Wars: The Story of America's Most Unlikely Abolitionist (Simon & Schuster, 2000). In it, Clinton recounts the life of Kemble, a British stage star turned Georgia plantation mistress, whose passionate writings against slavery made her a heroine of the Union cause.

New York Times science writer Dennis Overbye has created an accurate, detailed, and fascinating portrait of Einstein as a flawed, complex young man in his new book Einstein In Love: A Scientific Romance, (Viking Press 2000).

shakespeare society stages "hamlet"

Founded in 1877 by Henry Fowle Durant, The Wellesley College Shakespeare Society is the oldest continuous society on campus. Its purpose is to promote the study, understanding, and enjoyment of the works of William Shakespeare. The early Society had official ties to the London Shakespeare Society and prominent Shakespearean readers and critics of the time addressed its meetings. The production of a play each semester is one of Shakespeare Society's oldest and most valued traditions. The productions are entirely student-run; a director is elected each semester and all members, including those cast in the play, assist with the technical demands of production, including set construction, designing and operating lights and sound, costuming, and publicity.

This fall, the Society is staging Hamlet with performances Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 7 pm. Tickets will be on sale at Schneider from 4-6 pm through Friday or can be purchased at the door the night of the show. Admission prices are $5 for students; $7 general admission. Info: x3192.

student life task force to hold open forums throughout semester

The Student Life Task Force held its first open meeting Nov. 8 in Beebe as a forum for Wellesley College community members to share their thoughts on what is good about student life and what needs to be improved. The task force is specifically looking at the integral role residential life plays with the overall liberal arts education experience. With this role in mind, the task force is examining the best ways to organize and manage the Division of Student Life so that it can most fully meet the community's ongoing, and ever-changing, needs. This includes clarifying how faculty and student life professionals can collaborate in the advising and mentoring of students.

Community members are invited to email their thoughts on these issues to task force Co-chairs Sally Merry, Anthropology; Geneva Walker-Johnson, Dean of Students; or Shafina Shehnaz '01; or to attend one of the additional open meetings planned for three Wednesdays this semester: Nov. 15, Tower Court Great Hall, 8-9 pm Nov. 29, Stone-Davis Living Room, 7-8 pm Dec. 6, McAfee Living Room 1-2 pm.
