open community meeting scheduled on campus center site Three architectural firms have been selected as finalists for the commission to design the new campus center at Wellesley College. Chosen by a committee comprised of faculty, students, trustees, and staff, the finalists are: Mack Scogin Merrill Elam of Atlanta, Steven Holl of New York, and Thompson and Rose of Cambridge. The firms were selected from approximately a dozen that submitted proposals in response to the committees request this summer. Planning for the campus center received a major boost in April with a $25 million commitment for the building from Lulu Chow Wang 66 and Tony Wang. The architects are now studying the two sites that were proposed for the building by the Campus Center Planning Committee (CCPC): the Lakeside site next to Schneider and the Alumnae Valley site near Alumnae Hall. The firms will present their views to the architect selection committee at the end of November, and material from each of their presentations will be posted on the colleges website on December 1. An open community meeting will be held at 4:15 pm in Collins Cinema on December 5 for members of the college community to offer their views on the two sites under consideration. The committee has requested that anyone planning to attend the community meeting review the architects materials on the web beforehand. Edward Lawrence, vice chair of the Board of Trustees and chair of the architect selection committee, and other members of the committee will be present to hear the input and record it for the consideration of the entire committee. The committee will arrive at a recommendation on both the architect and the site during January and will present it to the board of trustees at its meeting later that month.
For its second production of the semester, Upstage, a student-run theatre group, will stage The House of Yes from November 30 through December 2 on Barstow Stage in Alumnae Hall. Written by Wendy MacLeod and directed by Wellesley College senior Denise Crooks, the play is a billed as a dark and shocking yet wickedly humorous in-depth look at the dynamics of one family. For ticket information and performance times, call 781-283-2000 or visit http://www.wellesley.edu/Theatre/season.html.
