writer edwidge danticat to visit campus on december 3 "Writing was a dangerous activity," Edwidge Danticat told Essence magazine in a 1996 interview. "Perhaps it was the danger that attracted me, the feeling of doing a high-wire act between stretching the limits of silence and telling the whole truth." Called "a writer of a poetic imagination" by the Los Angeles Times, Danticat, a Haitian-born author whose books have received both popular and literary recognition, will speak about her writing in a lecture in Jewett Auditorium on December 3 at 2:00 pm. Danticat's novel Breath, Eyes, Memory, written as her master's thesis and published by Soho Press in 1994, became a best seller in 1998 when it was selected by Oprah's Book Club. Her 1995 collection of stories, Krik? Krak!, was a National Book Award finalist. Her most recent novel is The Farming of Bones. Danticat is the editor of the recently published anthology, The Beacon Best of 2000: Great Writing by Women and Men of All Colors and Cultures, called "a stunning multicultural tribute to literary diversity" by Booklist.
"paper prayers" and campus walk mark world aids day Wellesley College will mark World AIDS Day on December 1 with a campus "walk for hope" and "Paper Prayers," an exhibit of works on paper in commemoration of those whose lives were lost to AIDS. "The project is connected to the Japanese tradition of hanging up painted strips of paper as prayers for good health and to cure the sick," explained Sarah Slavick, professor of art and the organizer of this year's project. Begun in 1989 at Boston's Howard Yezerski Gallery, the project has expanded to other exhibition spaces and has become a tradition at Wellesley. Although the size is consistent -- 4" x 12" strips oriented vertically --anything goes with regard to content: collage, calligraphy, poems, drawings, painting, photography, musical score, or an elegant mathematical curve. In the spirit of collaboration, pieces remain anonymous. The pieces will remain on exhibit, open to the public, until December 15. Exhibit visitors may select prayers to take home when the show closes and may make donations to the Pediatric AIDS Project in the collection box. The project will open with a commemorative reception in Jewett from 4 to 6 pm on November 30. People are urged to bring their prayers to the reception and hang them. Prayers also may be hung at any time during the following two weeks. Wellesley's annual "walk of hope" in honor of World AIDS Day will be held November 29, beginning at 1:00 pm at the Davis Museum. After circulating through the campus, the walk will conclude with a moment of reflection at the museum.
college finance seminar nov 29 "Early College Financial Planning 101: How to Plan Ahead for Your Child's Future," will be offered at 12:30 pm, Wednesday, November 29 in Pendleton West Room 105. The one-hour special seminar, by Michelle Tufau of the Office of Student Financial Services and Scott Prince of the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority, is open to Wellesley faculty, staff and students with children age 12 or younger. It is designed to demystify the often- anxiety-producing prospect of paying for college by presenting a realistic overview of costs, providing information on available financial resources, and discussing two Massachusetts college savings vehicles--the U. Plan Prepaid Tuition Program and the U. Fund College Investing Plan. It will cover planning options parents can use before, during and after their children's college years and will emphasize the importance of planning early. Registration for the seminar closed on November 22; however, space may still be available. Interested persons should call x 2263 for more information and materials. A second seminar may be offered if there is sufficient interest.
college hosts international forum on the black woman Scholars from institutions across the US and other parts of the world will convene at Wellesley College this week for a three-day conference exploring the impact of globalization on black women around the world. The symposium, "Global Perspectives on the Black Woman: Race and Gender in the Age of Globalization," is being held in celebration of Wellesley's 125th anniversary and in support of the United Nations Conference Against Racism, to be held next year in South Africa. "The symposium will enable us to delve into the many aspects of globalization and their effects on the lives of black women around the world," said Professor Filomina Steady, chair of the Africana Studies Department and organizer of the conference. "Black feminism, pan-africanism, economics, labor issues, immigration, human rights, the population debate and womanist theology are only some of the topics we will engage." In conjunction with the symposium, five black alumnae will discuss their life choices and professional experiences at a panel on Saturday, December 2, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Scheduled participants for the roundtable discussion, "Achievements, Challenges and New Horizons: Black Alumnae Face the 21st Century," include Delawitt Aklilu '76, an advisor in the UN' Division for the Advancement of Women; federal judge Zoe Bush'76; Cynthia Hawkins-Leon '81, a professor at the New England School of Law; Adelaide Sanford'50, a member of the New York Board of Regents; and Francille Rusan Wilson '69, Afro-American Studies professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. The conference program and complete schedule can be found at: http://www.wellesley.edu/Africana/news.html.
campus center site meeting dec 5 A community meeting will be held in Collins Cinema at 4:15 pm, Tuesday, December 5, for members of the college community to offer their views on the two sites under consideration for the new campus center. The proposed sites are the "Lakeside" site next to Schneider and the "Alumnae Valley" site near Alumnae Hall. Edward Lawrence, vice chair of the Board of Trustees and chair of the campus center architect selection committee, and other committee members will be on hand to hear and record community input. Those planning to attend the meeting are asked to review the materials from the architects on the CWIS before attending.
A campus-wide survey on parking and transportation is now up on the web and ready for responses. All faculty, students, and employees are asked to complete it, which takes less than 10 minutes, by December 1. The survey address is http://www.easysurvey.com/Wellesley. Note that the address is case-sensitive. A paper version of the survey has been distributed to members of the community whose daily work does not place them near a computer. The second community meeting on the parking and transportation study will be on Wednesday, December 6, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., in Collins Cinema. Here the consultants conducting the study will have preliminary results and will discuss some preliminary recommendations. This session will consist of a formal presentation by the consultants and a question and answer period so that members of the campus community can provide input before the final report is prepared.
colleagues raise $93,000 for charity When the numbers were tallied, the college's month-long annual employee charitable giving campaign was a rousing success. More than $93,000 was contributed in direct gifts and payroll deductions--about $8,000 more than last year, according to campaign co-chairs Mary Hackett and Heather Germano, human resources. "This campaign demonstrates the strength of the college community's proud tradition of generous giving," said President Diana Chapman Walsh. "I want to thank everyone who contributed and congratulate Mary, Heather, and their committee for such spec tacular results" Donors designated their gifts to any of four area organizations: Community Works, Oxfam, Rosie's Place, and United Way. "People could give to one, to all four, or to any combination," says Hackett. The campaign concluded with a raffle drawing and celebration in Alumnae Hall on November 13. All who made contributions were entered to receive prizes donated by departments and individual employees. Ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, prizes included: a mink teddy bear, President Walsh's parking space for a day, three round-trip rides to Logan Airport, and what has become the traditional "grand prize"-- an unfinished pine Shaker hutch made by the carpentry shop. Guest host teams, providing entertainment as they drew raffle winners, were: Pat Byrne and Barry Monahan, Irma Tryon and Carlos Vega, Lee Cuba and Jonathan Imber, and Fran Adams and Dave Martin. Paul Kimball, controller's; Patricia Paul, psychology; David Falvo, telecommunications; Farah Jaffer, resources; and Fran Adams, post office, comprised the organizing committee.
