wellesley sports teams record a stellar season
The standards for any Wellesley student are usually a little higher than most undergraduates--their grades, study habits and GPAs reflect a certain level of ability and hard work. Not surprisingly, Wellesley student-athletes achieve at the same rate--their goals, assists, points, hitting percentages, goals against averages, course times and overall records often set a benchmark--and sometimes shatter a record.
After 96 fall athletic contests, the college community has much to be proud of: Wellesley fall teams captured New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference championships in volleyball, field hockey and cross country and were runners-up in tennis, amassing a .727 winning percentage with an overall fall record of 57-21-1. Both volleyball and field hockey teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, and the soccer team earned a bid to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
With team success came individual honors as Wellesley athletes accounted for two NEWMAC Player of the Year honors, one Rookie of the Year and 14 NEWMAC all-conference selections. Seniors Ali Mostue and Marret Arfsten each were named NEWMAC Player of the Year in volleyball and field hockey. For Mostue, it was her second consecutive time receiving NEWMAC Player of the Year honors in volleyball after leading Wellesley to its fifth consecutive NEWMAC Championship. Christine Grant '06 earned Rookie of the Year honors after leading Wellesley to the 2002 cross-country championship, finishing second overall in the 126-runner field.
Eight athletes have received regional honors in their respective sports. Field hockey had five athletes honored, including three first-team
NFHCA Regional All-Americas in Betsy Masiello '03, Marret Arfsten '03 and Laura Bender '04 and two second-team honorees in Caitlin Andrews '05 and Zana Previti '05. Masiello has left her mark in Wellesley field hockey record books, shattering two records in her final season: assists in a career (30) and points in a career (124).
For the cross-country squad, youth prevailed as three first-year racers earned All-New England Regional Honors. Led by Christine Grant, Wellesley finished 12th out of 38 teams in the NCAA Regional Championships as Grant, Sarah Bard and Tracy Bassett each earned regional honors.learn about abc's of aging at wcw seminar
A television ad once claimed, "You're not getting older, you're getting better." Actually, getting older can mean getting better, according to Ruth Harriet Jacobs, a visiting scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women. Jacobs, 78, is a gerontologist, sociologist, poet and author of nine books including Be an Outrageous Older Woman. She also writes a monthly column for the award-winning Senior Times and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Women and Aging.
Jacobs will offer a brown-bag seminar, "Women's ABC's of Aging," Thursday, Dec. 5, from 12:30-1:30 pm in Cheever House, 828 Washington St. "I've written a lot of advice on how to age well, but this time I thought I would do it in a fun way," she said. "So I took a leaf from Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose and I put my advice for aging into rhymes."
Her advice, called "Mother Ruth's Rhymes for Aging, Raging and Saging," is also the title of her next book. "It's going to be a fun session with some advice on aging in a humorous way," she said, offering this example:
"A is for aging, that is not enraging
As seasoned citizens continue saging
Empowered by verses of Mother Ruth
In alphabet form like Mother Goose."
Jacobs notes women outlive men by six or seven years, and that men and women are living much longer than their parents and grandparents. Jacobs encourages older people to make those years count by speaking out on political and social issues. She also founded RASP, which stands for Remarkable Aging Smart People, a group anyone can join. The only qualification is the willingness to take control of one's life and make a difference at any age. For more info: x2483.Monday, Dec. 2, is the deadline for donating an item or service for the traditional thank-you celebration and raffle that takes place at the end of the Charitable Giving Campaign.
Co-chairs Melissa Hawkins, Center for Work and Service, and Jonathan Imber, sociology, note that this is one more way the community can be involved in this year's campaign. Whether you can bake a pan of brownies or offer tickets to the Bruins, your raffle item will add to the fun on Tuesday, Dec. 10, when the end-of campaign celebration takes place from 9-11 am in the Academic Council Room.
To make a donation to one or more target charities (Community Works, Oxfam America, Rosie's Place and the United Way) or to the raffle, contact Hawkins at x2357.
priscilla, queen of the desert ends film series
The last of the film series related to the Davis Museum's Women Who Ruled exhibit will be shown Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 pm in Collins Cinema. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is an Australian road-trip comedy that follows two drag queens and a transsexual as they travel through the outback. In a bus christened Priscilla, the trio encounters both new fans and vitriolic homophobes, giving a realistic glimpse at the defenses those on society's fringe must develop to survive.
"The dance numbers are lavish and fun to watch, whether they're performed in the middle of the desert, atop a bar in some out-of-the-way town or on a stage in Sydney," wrote one reviewer. "Mostly 70's disco hits (including once-popular tunes by Gloria Gaynor, the Village People and Abba), these songs are lip-synched and gyrated to with gusto by the transvestite trio as they don garish costumes and even worse makeup to wow their audiences."

The Office of the Dean of the College would like to remind students that the online SEQ system will be available from Dec . 3-15. The SEQ conference on students' FirstClass desktops will be used to communicate SEQ information throughout this period.
Each student is required to complete an evaluation for each instructor in every course in which she is enrolled. Members of the faculty and the administration take SEQs very seriously, and student compliance with this requirement is very important. For more information, call x3583.
jonathan cheek, psychology, talked about the stigma attached to smoking in the Wilmington News Journal, Delaware's statewide daily paper, and its web publication, delawareonline.com. While 23 percent of Delaware residents smoke, the state has recently added bars, casinos and bowling alleys to the growing list of smoke-free areas. To help cope with the change, Cheek noted that sequestered smokers often form a subculture where they can commiserate about what they may feel is unfair about these new laws.
peggy levitt, sociology, was quoted in a New York Times story, "Scavenging in America for the Folks Back Home," on how and why immigrants groups in this country organize to help others back home. Sometimes the benefits go both ways. "There's a whole social dynamic underlying this," Levitt said. "If you've suffered a decline in status as an immigrant and you work really hard and you're really lonely, it's a big compensating experience to be able to bring home a check."
janet lavin rapelye, admissions, has been interviewed by New England Cable News on the cost of college tuition and by The Boston Sunday Globe for its front-page feature, "On Wellesley Campus, a Majority of Diversity." The piece explored Wellesley's "uncommon success in revising its image as a privileged white enclave," wrote reporter Jenna Russell, who conducted wide-ranging interviews and attended paul fisher's English class, "Race, Class, and Gender: The Literature of Modern American Communities," and a Multicultural Council meeting. In addition to rapelye, others quoted include diana chapman walsh, president; dana weekes '03; and kelly brown, advisor to students of African descent.
