enjoy the fun of family and friends weekend at wellesley
Wellesley will celebrate its annual Family and Friends Weekend Friday, Oct. 22-Sunday, Oct. 24. The event offers parents, grandparents, siblings and friends the chance to enjoy classes, department receptions, campus tours, student performances, sporting events and faculty lectures.
A highlight of the weekend is the Friday, Oct. 22, Distinguished Faculty Lecture, “Celestial Worlds Discover’d: Exploration of the Solar System,” with Richard French, professor of astronomy, at 4:30 pm in Alumnae Hall.
“For most of human history, the planets were simply points of light in the sky, and it is only in modern times that we have begun to learn the true nature of each of these celestial worlds,” French said. “The story of these discoveries tells us as much about ourselves and our own planet as it does about our local neighborhood in the universe.”
French’s research centers on the rings and atmospheres of the giant planets. He uses large optical telescopes around the world, the enormous radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain images of Saturn’s rings, atmosphere and small moons. He has been a team member of NASA’s Cassini Mission to Saturn since 1990.
“From 2004-2008, my students and I will be active rocket scientists as we instruct the giant spacecraft to observe Saturn’s rings and atmosphere,” said French, who has just begun a new project to travel around the world with a small student-operated telescope to observe Pluto and Triton (Neptune’s largest moon) when they pass in front of distant stars. “We’ll use these occultations to determine the temperature and density of the tenuous atmospheres of these cold and remote worlds,” he said.
On Saturday, Oct. 23, Diana Chapman Walsh will present the President’s Address at 3:30 pm in Houghton Memorial Chapel. That evening, a South African Benefit Concert will feature student performance groups. On Sunday, the Music Society will present a performance. See WellesleyWeek calendar and stories or go to www.wellesley.edu/FamilyWeekend/schedule.html.
observatory night will focus on eclipses
On Friday, Oct. 22, from 7-9 pm, Wellesley’s Whitin Observatory will present a Public Night with no reservations necessary for interested sky watchers.
“We will be open to any and all for telescope observing, if skies are clear, tours of the building, and a talk by Professor Wendy Bauer on ‘Eclipses,’” said Jeffrey Regester, astronomy.
Bauer’s 25-minute talk will begin at 7:15 pm, with repeat performances at 7:45 and 8:15 pm.
On Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 9:30 pm to 1 am, there will be a total lunar eclipse when the moon enters the shadow of the earth.
“The Moon will be deepest in the shadow a little after 11 pm,” Regester said. “Because this is happening on a weeknight when we have evening classes at the Observatory, there will be no public night for this eclipse as we have done in the past. Professor Bauer’s talk will be about the hows and whys of eclipses. For actually observing the eclipse on the 27th, the best tool is a pair of binoculars (or just your naked eye) and you don’t need to be at a dark-sky location–your own back yard will be fine.”

Carla Robbins ’74, chief diplomatic correspondent and news editor for The Wall Street Journal, will speak about her career in the field of journalism on Friday, Oct. 22, at 12:30 pm in Pendleton Atrium. The title of her talk will be “Covering the World in the Race for the Presidency.” The lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Work and Service and the Committee for Political and Legislative Action.
Information will be available for students about the Emily Cohen MacFarquhar ’59 Internship in International Journalism. A separate information meeting on the internship program will be held in November. For more information, call x2357.
take part in a women of color performance workshop
A three-day “Women of Color Performance Workshop,” led by performer, writer and filmmaker Kristina Sheryl Wong, will be held Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23, from 7-9 pm at Slater House and Sunday, Oct. 24, from 10 am-5 pm in Jewett Auditorium. Sponsored by a number of student groups, including DisOrient and Wellesley Asian Alliance, the workshop includes a lecture and final performance at about 3 pm on Sunday.
Wong will present a performance featuring excerpts from her many different shows and a question-and-answer workshop on Friday. Saturday events include a lecture and presentation. Sunday’s performance will be a culmination of the workshop with an informal show and a reception.
“This is a great opportunity for all women of color and anyone who would like to pursue a career in acting or in the media or who would like to experience a diversity of perspectives through the performance medium,” said Julia Powers ’05, DisOrient’s president/founder.
Wong’s first solo show, “Miss Chinatown 2nd Runner Up,” was named a “Best Bet” by the Los Angeles Times. She currently tours the country with two shows, “Free?” and “Faces of America,” which is presented to schools. She has written for two anthologies, Yell-oh Girls Anthology (Harper Collins) and Catching a Wave (Northeastern University Press) and is artistic director of the Asian American Teen Theater Co., an educational group. computing competition will be held at wellesley
The Boston area preliminary round of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest, sponsored by IBM, will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Science Center from 10 am-3pm, with a wrap-up session from 3-4 pm.The event will encompass five intense hours of competitive team fun. Among 12 teams expected to compete will be members of the student group Wellesley Association for Computing (WAC), which practices weekly for such competitions. “The top four teams from our contest will proceed to the Northeastern Regionals; the top teams from the regionals will go on to the international contest, which will be held in Shanghai this year,” said Franklyn Turbak, computer science. learn about korean culture at a festival
The Korean Students Association (KSA) will present a Cultural Festival, “DanPoongNori,” on Severance Green on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 11 am-1 pm. Singing, traditional and modern dancing, traditional drumming and Tae Kwon Do will be performed. Activities and games will be part of the fun, and information on Korean issues will be presented. The festival will include Korean food and bubble tea.
“The Cultural Festival is an event that gives students, children and parents a chance to experience a part of the colorful and unique Korean culture through music, dance and food,” said the KSA’s Jane Kim ’05. “In addition to traditional song and dance, we have incorporated a number of modern acts into the show in hopes of reaching out to a diverse audience.” For more information, e-mail jkim2@wellesley.edu.
tracy gleason, psychology, has been quoted in the October Parents Magazine in an article titled “Pretend Friends.” Gleason, whose research interests include children who enjoy imaginary friends. “Typically, they like to socialize, so when nobody’s available, they make up someone,” Gleason said, assuring parents their children will not fall out of touch with reality if they acknowledge the imaginary friend. “Actually, when you ask questions about the friend and let your child answer, you reinforce that her pal is under her control,” she said.
joseph joyce, economics, contributed to a story, “Trade Deficit Hits a Record,” in The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Blaming the ballooning trade deficit on weak exports and high oil prices, the article noted that the U.S. economy continues to run on borrowed cash. “This shows you the power of energy prices to play havoc with the economy,” Joyce said. “It’s like the joker in the deck.” He added that exports will probably rebound and the economy will go on living with a deficit. When asked if a day of reckoning will come, he replied, “We don’t want to get to the point that all of a sudden we hit the tripwire. You don’t want to wreck the economy by having the exchange rate drop 20, 30 or 40 percent.”
melinda lopez, theatre, has been featured in the Boston Sunday Globe Arts section. The article notes the world premiere of Lopez’s new play, Sonia Flew, which inaugurates the Huntington Theatre Company’s new second stage, the Virginia Wimberly Theatre, in the South End. “It is a tremendous honor and recognition to be the playwright launching a new theatre space in Boston,” said Nora Hussey, director of theatre. Lopez’s play is about Cuban exodus, tackling themes of family, country, home and loss.

don't miss...lydian string quartet performs beethoven, schumann and ives
“The Lydian String Quartet is in its prime,” writes Richard Dyer in The Boston Globe. “It is an ensemble in which intuition and intellect are ideally balanced, and in which youthful energy and idealism have been tempered and reinforced by experience.” Winner of numerous awards and much praise, the quartet will perform a program of Beethoven, Schumann and Ives in Jewett Auditorium Sunday, Oct. 24, at 7 pm. The quartet members are Daniel Stepner and Judith Eissenberg, violins; Mary Ruth Ray, viola; and Joshua Gordon, violoncello. The group, which is in residence at Brandeis University, is not only masterful in the traditional quartet repertoire, but also has a special flair for contemporary music.
