Two Are Named Marshall Scholars
-- Claudia Veritas '02 and Marisa Van Saanen '01 are two of
40 Americans awarded Marshall Scholarships to study at a British
University next year. They are the 10th and 11th Wellesley
students to win the prestigious honor since the program began.
Veritas, a political science major and captain of the lacrosse
team, will complete her sociology studies at Oxford University
and plans to become a child advocate. Van Saanen, who was
president of College Government and now serves as the Young
Alumna member of the Board of Trustees, plans to study international
relations at Oxford. More information can be found at http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Releases/121801/html.
The
Wellesley Campaign Is Going Strong -- Despite this
fall's national tragedy, an economic recession, and continued
market volatility, the College finished 2001 with strong results
for The Wellesley Campaign. As of December 30, cumulative
campaign gifts and pledges neared $251 million, more than
60 percent of the $400 million goal. The winter issue of the
campaign newsletter, with more details on campaign progress
and events, will be mailed to all alumnae and friends in early
February. You also can visit The Wellesley Campaign online
at http://www.wellesley.edu/Resources/contents.html.
New
Chief Investment Officer and Museum Director Arrive on Campus
-- Wellesley welcomes
two new senior administrators to campus this winter: Jane
Mendillo, chief investment officer, and David Mickenberg,
the Ruth Gordon Shapiro '37 Director of the Davis Museum and
Cultural Center.
Mendillo comes to Wellesley
from Harvard Management Company, Inc., where she was vice
president for external management. At Wellesley, she will
strengthen the investment office and oversee the management
of the college's billion-dollar endowment. She will meet members
of the Board of Trustees at their meeting later this week
and officially begins work on February 4. For more information,
visit http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Releases/2001/120301.html.
Mickenberg, who was director
of the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University for
14 years, assumed his new post full time in January after
a period of transition last fall. In addition to his museum
duties, he will hold an academic appointment as senior lecturer
in art. More information is available at http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Releases/2001/082301.html.
New
Chief Investment Officer and Museum Director Arrive on Campus
-- The study of robotics
often ends in testy competitions pitting machine against machine,
all doing the same thing: say, tossing a ball into a hoop.
But students in Wellesley's Robotic Design Studio this Wintersession
develop a different class of robots that are part science,
part art, and entirely individual. Their projects incorporate
a range of disciplines, including computer science, physics,
math, biology, engineering, and art.
The
Robotic Design Studio's 33 students showcased their creations
last Thursday, January 24, at an event drawing hundreds of
spectators, including local school children. For more information,
including photos and videos of this year's robots and those
from previous classes, go to http://cs.wellesley.edu/rds/rds02/museum.html.
