Lacrosse
Co-Captain Wins NCAA's Most Prestigious Postgraduate Scholarship
-- Senior Claudia Veritas, co-captain of the lacrosse team,
has been awarded the prestigious 2002 NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate
Scholarship, one of only three female student-athletes nationwide
to be honored. Veritas is the only female student-athlete
finalist representing all of the NCAA's Division III. The
NCAA chooses the student-athletes "in recognition of outstanding
academic achievement and potential for success in postgraduate
study in his or her planned career." A recipient of a Marshall
Scholarship, Veritas will use the $12,500 scholarship award
to support her graduate studies in sociology this fall at
Oxford University.
The Boston Globe published
a profile of Veritas, highlighting her many talents and experiences,
including her work at Mother Teresa's Clinic for the Sick
and Dying in India, her volunteer service on a bucket brigade
at Ground Zero, and her participation on a team that recently
won a regional Web site design competition. You can read the

Signs Of Spring On Campus --
The rhododendrons in the valley outside Clapp Library are
blooming, the two swans on Lake Waban have a brood of fuzzy
little cygnets, and a giant white tent has sprouted on Severance
Green. The college's 124th commencement exercises will take
place under the tent on Friday morning, featuring the approximately
600 members of the Class of 2002 and remarks by Whoopi Goldberg,
student speaker Christine Dobridge, and President Diana Chapman
Walsh. For more information about the festivities, visit http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Commencement/index.html
