Banner Year For Wellesley In National Fellowship Competitions
-- 2002 has been a banner year for Wellesley alumnae and students in national fellowship competitions. In addition to two Marshall and two Watson fellows announced in previous issues of WellesleyWire, Wellesley applicants garnered an impressive 11 Fulbright awards, more than 5 percent of the total number of grants awarded. Two Wellesley seniors and one alumna from the class of 2001 have been awarded 2002 Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies, a competitive award for first-year doctoral students. Wellesley led all liberal arts colleges with its total of three fellowships. And two students majoring in the sciences have been named Barry M. Goldwater Scholars for the 2002-2003 academic year. Lacrosse Co-Captain Wins NCAA's Most Prestigious Postgraduate Scholarship -- Senior Claudia Veritas, co-captain of the lacrosse team, has been awarded the prestigious 2002 NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, one of only three female student-athletes nationwide to be honored. Veritas is the only female student-athlete finalist representing all of the NCAA's Division III. The NCAA chooses the student-athletes "in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in postgraduate study in his or her planned career." A recipient of a Marshall Scholarship, Veritas will use the $12,500 scholarship award to support her graduate studies in sociology this fall at Oxford University.

The Boston Globe published a profile of Veritas, highlighting her many talents and experiences, including her work at Mother Teresa's Clinic for the Sick and Dying in India, her volunteer service on a bucket brigade at Ground Zero, and her participation on a team that recently won a regional Web site design competition. Alumnae Association Honors Professor Chip Case -- The Wellesley College Alumnae Association has given its 2002 Faculty Service Award to Karl "Chip" Case, Katharine Coman and A. Barton Professor of Economics. Given annually since 1998, the award recognizes the dedicated service that faculty members give to alumnae by participating in WCAA programs and for "exhibiting excellence in furthering the educational interests of and opportunities for alumnae of the College."

Watch your mail box for the latest issue of "Wellesley," the alumnae magazine, which features compelling essays by six alumnae about their experiences with violence against women, profiles of the three winners of the 2002 Alumnae Achievement Award, the ever-popular class notes, and much more.

Sure Signs Of Spring On Campus -- The rhododendrons in the valley outside Clapp Library are blooming, the two swans on Lake Waban have a brood of fuzzy little cygnets, and a giant white tent has sprouted on Severance Green. The college's 124th commencement exercises will take place under the tent on Friday morning, featuring the approximately 600 members of the Class of 2002 and remarks by Whoopi Goldberg, student speaker Christine Dobridge, and President Diana Chapman Walsh.
