Fall Marks 10th Anniversary
of President Walsh's Presidency -- It
was 10 years ago this fall that Diana Chapman Walsh became
Wellesley’s 12th president and the fourth
alumna to lead the institution. This special anniversary
was noted
by the students who organized this month’s Lake Day
with the theme of “Wendy in Wonderland.” The
celebration on Severance Green included Diana walking through
a “rabbit hole,” jam tarts, a tea cup saucer
ride, an anniversary cake, and a giant card with photographic
highlights of Walsh’s tenure.
In her remarks at Convocation
in September, the president reflected briefly on her anniversary. “It’s hard
for me to believe that a full decade has passed since I drew
a deep breath, closed my eyes, and took what now, knowing
what I know, was a bold leap of faith into a vortex of expectations,
obligations, and tests,” she said. “I offer that
ten-year perspective to those who are taking today what may
feel like a wild leap of faith – faith in its most
encompassing sense of meaning, trust, and hope.”

Web
Cams Offer Glimpses of Campus Construction -- The
sounds of construction are evident on campus as the College
undertakes
its largest building projects in a decade.
Two new Web cams offer glimpses of the progress already made
on the Wang Campus Center and Davis Parking Facility. The
Web cams refresh every 10 seconds, enabling viewers to watch
progress. Another fun aspect is the “view today’s
(or yesterday’s) progress” featuring photos showing
progress throughout the day.
Although not visible in the construction photos, it is important
to note that the landscaping of the buildings will be as
important as the buildings themselves. These plans can be
viewed on the Web site also.
The parking facility, located at the Alumnae Hall parking
lot, is scheduled to open early in the spring semester. Located
near Alumnae Hall and connected to the parking facility underground,
the campus center will be a place in which the whole community
can socialize and work together. The building is slated for
completion early in 2005.
The Web cams, weekly photos, and other project plans can
be found at http://www.wellesley.edu/AdminandPlanning/CampusProjects/index.html
College Welcomes Alumnae
Comments on Faculty Under Review -- The
Committee on Faculty Appointments publishes each fall and
spring a list of faculty members to be reviewed in that
academic year for tenure, promotion, reappointment, or merit
increases. Alumnae and current students are encouraged to
submit letters about courses and/or instructors at any time,
not just when someone is being reviewed.
Letters should be addressed
to the Dean of the College, Chair of the Committee on Faculty
Appointments, 106 Central
Street, Wellesley, MA 02481. Letters are shared with the
faculty member and his/her department chair, so any letter
should indicate whether (1) the letter should be shared,
as written, including the author’s name; or (2) the
letter should be shared with the author’s name and
identifying wording removed. Letters must be submitted with
a signature (not via e-mail).
The list of faculty under review is online at
