Berger-Sweeney
and Wolfson Named Associate Deans -- President
Diana Chapman Walsh and incoming Dean of the College Andrew Shennan
have appointed Joanne Berger-Sweeney, biological sciences, and
Adele Wolfson, chemistry, as associate deans of the college,
effective July 1, 2004. “Joanne and Adele are outstanding
scholar-teachers who have served with distinction in a variety
of important capacities and have earned the respect of faculty
and other colleagues throughout the college,” stated Walsh
and Shennan in a written announcement of the appointments. “They
possess in abundance the personal, intellectual and administrative
qualities that the dean’s office will need in order to
advance the ambitious agenda that has emerged in the process
of selecting a new dean of the college, in the work of the Committee
on Academic Excellence, and in many other conversations and committees
over the past year.”

President Walsh
Pens Op-ed on Leadership -- In a recent op-ed in
The Boston Globe,
President Walsh called for "a national
dialogue on leadership itself" and articulated five qualities
that trustworthy leaders exhibit and defend. "Every American
knows something about the values we want our leaders to embody
and uphold on our behalf," wrote Walsh. "And many of
us worry that our country is making grievous mistakes, both here
and abroad: dwelling in fear, painting the world in black and
white, meeting violence with violence, fueling the fires of hatred,
acting in isolation with arrogance and hubris, hardening ourselves
to the suffering and pain our actions are causing. We sense that
there are better ways to lead." Trustworthy leaders question
themselves, honor partnerships, resist violence, value difference,
and "create communities that function as sustaining circles
of trust."

Trust," can be read online at http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/President/Speeches/2004/leadershipoped.html
Seniors "Paint" the
Campus Red to Celebrate End of Classes -- In
keeping with a Wellesley tradition, members of the class of 2004
celebrated
the last day of classes earlier this month by decorating the
campus. The students worked late into the night, so that faculty,
staff, and students would be greeted with a blaze of red, the
class color. Shiny red streamers hung from Galen Stone Tower.
The Science Center and many of its inanimate "inhabitants" were
festooned with scarlet. Several inflatable lobsters floated happily
in Paramecium Pond. And the four class deans found their Green
Hall offices knee-deep with red balloons.
