Toni Morrison Tells Graduates Achieving Adulthood is a "Difficult
Beauty" -- Rain
and thunder couldn't dampen the spirits of the 579 members of
the Wellesley College Class of 2004 as they received their bachelor
of arts degrees at the 126th Commencement Exercises on Friday,
May 28. In her address to the Class of 2004, Morrison told the
graduates that while the future of the world is not totally in
the control of "finite humans," they should do their
best to protect it. "Now that's a heavy burden to be placed
on one generation by a member of another generation because it's
a responsibility we ought to share," she said.
President
Diana Chapman Walsh, in her traditional "Charge to
the Class," advised graduates to pursue happiness as a most
important goal. "As the world's great philosophical systems
and religions attest - and as we know from our own experience - reaching
out to others in kindness and empathy enhances inner peace," she
said.

Wellesley Astronomers
and Friends Greet Early Morning Transit of Venus -- The
roof of the new Davis Parking Facility near Alumnae Hall was
the viewing place for several dozen early risers, who recently
gathered to watch the transit of Venus across the sun. Members
of Wellesley's Astronomy Department brought telescopes, a long
pinhole camera, and filtered lenses for viewing the rare event.
A selection of photographs from the morning are available
online at http://www.wellesley.edu/Astronomy/showcase.htm
Record Numbers
Attend Reunion for 4s and 9s -- Approximately 1,900
alumnae from the Class of 1924 to the Class of 1999 returned
to Wellesley with family and friends for Reunion Weekend, June
4-6. The total number of registered guests was a record-setting
3,200. Warm, sunny, and dry weather conditions prevailed for
most of the weekend, enabling alumnae and friends to enjoy the
splendor of the campus, including new facilities, such as the
Davis Parking Facility and renovated Clapp Library, and many
restored parts of the landscape, such as Tupelo Lane and Tower
Hill.
Unofficial photographer, Amy Arnold '94, invites all alumnae to

New
VP for Finance and Treasurer Named -- Wellesley
has announced the appointment Andrew B. Evans as vice president
for finance and treasurer. A senior higher education administrator
for nearly two decades, Evans was selected after a comprehensive
national search. He is currently vice president for finance at
Oberlin College, a position he has held for nearly nine years.
"In Andy Evans we have found a proven leader ready to take
up the challenges inherent in this vital role at the college," said
Wellesley President Diana Chapman Walsh in making the announcement. "He
is person of integrity and character who listens and communicates
exceedingly well with everyone and has a strong understanding of
the academic mission." Evans will join the campus community
on August 19. He succeeds Ray Clark, who has served as interim vice
president and treasurer since last fall.
