Campaign on Record Pace; Trustees Challenge Others to Join Effort -- During its January 28 meeting, the Board of Trustees celebrated a historic moment in The Wellesley Campaign: at the end of December, campaign commitments totaled $411 million, surpassing the $400 million goal six months before the campaign's June 30 conclusion. In announcing the "stupendous" news, Board Chair Vicki Herget '73 said, "This is a moment for every alumna and friend of Wellesley to bask in the collective glow of success and to reflect on the impact these gifts are making to the Wellesley we all love. It is clear that, when the campaign ends, Wellesley will again set a record for the largest fund-raising effort by any liberal arts college."

Funding gaps still remain for several major institutional priorities, most notably the construction projects in Alumnae Valley: the Wang Campus Center, Davis Parking Facility, and valley landscape restoration. To highlight the importance of these projects and to encourage others to help fully fund them before the campaign's conclusion, the Board of Trustees recently raised more than $10 million and is challenging others in the broader Wellesley community to join them in these efforts.

More information about the remaining under funded priorities of The Wellesley Campaign will be available in the forthcoming issue of the campaign progress report, to be mailed later this month.

Three to Receive Alumnae Achievement Awards -- The Alumnae Association will honor three alumnae with its highest award at the 35th annual Alumnae Achievement Awards Ceremony Friday, February 25. The awards, given annually to alumnae for excellence and distinction in their fields of endeavor, will honor Carole Beebe Tarantelli '64, psychoanalyst, anti-terrorism activist and former member of the Italian Parliament; Ellen Jacobson Levine '64, journalist and editor-in-chief of "Good Housekeeping;" and Lois Juliber '71, business leader and vice chairman of Colgate-Palmolive.

The Wellesley College community, including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae and their guests, are invited to attend the ceremony at 5:30 PM in Alumnae Hall.

Blizzard Creates Wellesley Winter Wonderland-- The first blizzard of 2005 hit the Wellesley campus with a vengeance January 22-23. By the time the skies cleared, about two feet of snow had blanketed the campus. The snow and drifts caused by high winds presented a challenge to the grounds crew, who worked around the clock to clear campus paths, stairways, roads and parking lots. When the stormed had passed, photo opportunities, a selection of which can be found on the link below, were plentiful.

Foundation Gift Supports Korean Studies
Next fall, Wellesley will add Korean language and literature to its array of academic options. The new major will be established with help from a recent grant from the Korea Foundation to support a new professorship in Korean language, literature and culture. A national search is now underway to hire a Korean language and literature professor who will join the faculty this fall. Wellesley inaugurated a new department of East Asian Languages and Literatures in July 2004, providing a framework to incorporate the study of Korea into the curriculum.

More information about the grant and academic initiatives is online at http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Releases/2005/012505.html
