New
York Times ad promotes women's colleges as science
educators -- Wellesley
has partnered with other members of the Women's
College Coalition on a full-page advertisement,
scheduled to run in this Sunday's New York Times
(March 20), promoting women's colleges' excellent
track record in educating women in the sciences.
The ad is set to appear in the first section
of the newspaper.
The advertisement stems from a broader partnership
between the Women's College Coalition and the newspaper,
which included a conference last spring, attended by
several Wellesley students, on the importance of mobilizing
women's political power, particularly through voter
registration and get-out-the-vote efforts.
For
profiles of Wellesley student and faculty experiences
in the sciences,
including new Watson Fellow Laura-Anne
Ventouras and Associate Dean Joanne Berger-Sweeney
'79, visit the Admissions Office's "Women in the
Sciences" Web page at http://www.wellesley.edu/admission/about/wo_science.html.

Tibetan
Buddhist nuns create sacred sand mandala at Davis Museum & Cultural
Centers -- Last
month eight Tibetan Buddhist nuns from Nepal created
a sacred sand mandala at the Davis Museum & Cultural
Center. The women were among the first Tibetan Buddhist
women to learn this sacred art practice, which has
been traditionally reserved for monks. Working in silence
and with painstaking care, the women carefully crafted
the two-dimensional painting with vibrantly colored
sand. On March 1, the nuns dismantled the mandala,
sweeping away the grains of sand and carrying them
across the snow-covered campus to Lake Waban, where
they were scattered into the water.
The events drew more than 4,200 visitors and were
the subject of articles in local and regional newspapers.
A
description of the "Circles of Healing, Circles
of Peace" project, including photographs of the
mandala's creation and eventual dismantling, can be
found at the Religious and Spiritual Life Web site, http://www.wellesley.edu/RelLife/rel/buddhism/photos.html.
