Snow Creates Wellesley
Winter Wonderland
After a milder-than-usual January, the Wellesley campus
was transformed into a winter wonderland after the
first blizzard of 2006 struck February 11-12. By the
time the skies cleared, about 18 inches of snow had
blanketed the campus. The snow and drifts caused by
high winds presented a challenge to the grounds crew,
who worked around the clock to clear campus paths,
stairways, roads and parking lots. When the stormed
had passed, photo opportunities, a selection of which
can be found on the link below, were plentiful.

Volunteers
Travel to Louisiana to Help with Hurricane Relief
Twenty Wellesley students and staff members, including
President Walsh, traveled to Louisiana during January
to assist Habitat for Humanity in its hurricane relief
efforts. The volunteers donned protective suits as
they gutted a badly-damaged house, shoveling nearly
a foot of debris-filled mud and tearing down walls
to the wooden studs.
The group also met with and was hosted by several
local alumnae, who provided firsthand accounts and
tours of some of the storms' damage.
More information on the service initiative, including

Peace Corps
Recognizes Wellesley for Volunteers
In
its recently-released 2006 listing of "Top
Producing Colleges and Universities," the Peace
Corps recognized Wellesley for its alumnae volunteers.
With 20 alumnae currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers,
Wellesley ranks 11th among colleges with fewer than
5,000 undergraduates. "Wellesley's legacy of service
inspires today's students to advance this tradition
of action for others across the world," said Joanne
Murray, director of the Center for Work and Service.
Trustees Approve Tenure for Ramseyer and Weerapana
At
its January meeting, the Board of Trustees approved
the two recommendations for tenure presented by President
Walsh on behalf of the Committee on Faculty Appointments.
The newly-tenured faculty are Valerie Ramseyer, history,
and Akila Weerapana, economics. Ramseyer, who received her PhD from the University
of Chicago and has taught at Wellesley since 1999,
teaches and studies medieval history. Weerapana also
joined the Wellesley faculty in 1999, after receiving
his PhD from Stanford University. His areas of specialty
are monetary economics and international macroeconomics.
Three Recognized
with Alumnae Achievement Award
A distinguished physicist, film director, and astronaut
were honored with the Alumnae Achievement Award last
week at a ceremony in Alumnae Hall. The awards are
given annually for excellence and distinction in their
fields of endeavor. The 2006 recipients were Persis
Drell '77, a renowned physicist at Stanford University,
Nora Ephron '62, an award-winning screenwriter, producer,
and director; and Pamela Melroy '83, NASA astronaut,
Space Shuttle pilot, and Wellesley College trustee.
