President
Diana Chapman Walsh to Step Down in June 2007
At last week's meeting of the Board of
Trustees, President Diana Chapman Walsh announced her
decision to end her tenure as president in June 2007.
"There is never an easy time to walk away from
work you love, but I know this is the right time --
for Wellesley and for me," said Walsh. "The
College is robust and focused, with a wonderfully promising
future. For my part, the rewarding experience of serving
Wellesley with all my heart has reshaped me in ways
I now need time apart to absorb, and then to transform
into another new beginning."
In
a message to the college community Walsh wrote, "At
this moment of decision, ...I have one simple message
I want to convey to each of you: students, faculty,
staff, alumnae, and trustees, all who give so unstintingly
of yourselves day after day to keep making Wellesley
better and better. I want you to know how proud I am
of all we have accomplished together. I want you to
know how grateful I am for your dedication and support.
The Wellesley College of today - so wise, resilient,
and full of life - bears the indelible imprint of our
combined efforts. The Wellesley of tomorrow will surely
prosper and will always reflect the wholehearted stewardship
we brought to our work when it was our turn to hold
the college in trust for a time."
"Diana Chapman Walsh is an extraordinary leader
who has strengthened Wellesley in countless ways," commented
Vicki Herget of Chicago, chair of the Board of Trustees
and a member of the Class of 1973. "Those of us
fortunate to have worked closely with her understand
how privileged the College has been to have her at
the helm. She brings intellect, insight and sensitivity
to every situation and creates learning opportunities
in each context. The College is deeply indebted to
Diana for her selfless and devoted service."
