ACADEMIC
YEAR OPENS WITH NEW FACES, CHERISHED TRADITIONS
The class of 2010 arrived on campus in
late August for a week of orientation and has already
begun to make its mark on campus. The 590 new students
hail from 45 states plus Washington, DC and the US
Virgin Islands (with California sending the largest
number of students, at 91), and represent 41 nations
of citizenship. 17 Davis Degree Scholars and 25 transfer
students.
The
College also welcomed 14 new tenure-track faculty
members to campus this fall. Read a bit about each
of them in WellesleyWeek at:

Wearing academic caps and gowns for the first time
and cheered by their fellow students, members of the
senior class processed with the faculty into Alumnae
Hall for Convocation, September 5. Following the ceremony,
students gathered outside for step singing, a cherished
and lively Wellesley tradition.

WELLESLEY
SCORES HIGH ON COLLEGE RANKINGS
Wellesley
has received accolades from several recent college
rankings and publications. For
the ninth year, U.S. News & World Report has ranked
Wellesley fourth among national liberal arts colleges.
For the past 15 years, Wellesley has placed among the
top five colleges and continues to be the highest ranked
women’s college. Wellesley earned high marks
for its high graduation rate (93%), its racial, ethnic
and socioeconomic diversity (#3 among colleges) and
its "value" (#3),a rough measure of academic
quality and strong financial aid.
In its September issue, Black Enterprise magazine
ranked Wellesley 12th among its top 50 colleges for
African Americans. The list was based primarily on
black student graduation rate, academic and social
environments, and black student enrollment. In the
magazine's last ranking in 2004, Wellesley placed 29th.
For
the second consecutive year, Wellesley has placed
in the top two liberal arts colleges by Washington
Monthly magazine. The rankings, according to the editors,
are based on "what colleges are doing for the
country," using non-traditional measures such
as graduates who go into national and community service,
institutional support of beneficial research, and enrollment
of low-income students.

Mibenge, who lost both parents to AIDS, was recognized
for her commitment to AIDS/HIV research and education.
In addition to her coursework, she works as an intern
