First Members of Class of 2011 Receive Acceptance Letters

The first 123 students of Wellesley's class of 2011 received their coveted early decision acceptance letters earlier this month. The group represents approximately 20% of the expected total class enrollment, a percentage consistent with previous years. These new Wellesley women are an impressive and diverse group, representing five countries and 36 states plus the Virgin Islands. Thirty percent are women of color, and, according to Dean of Admission Jennifer Desjarlais, "As a group, they are active in service and truly exemplify the Wellesley College mission to educate women who will make a difference in the world."

Prof. Mary Lefkowitz Awarded National Humanities Medal

Mary Lefkowitz, a renowned classics scholar and professor emerita of classical studies, was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush for her contributions to the humanities. Lefkowitz received the award last month at a White House ceremony attended by the President, First Lady Laura Bush and nine other recipients. According to the National Endowment for the Humanities, the prestigious award “honors individuals and organizations whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities, broadened citizens' engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand America's access to important humanities resources.”

Lefkowitz joined the Wellesley faculty in 1959 and was named the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities in 1979, a position she held until her retirement last year.

Wang Campus Center Receives Prestigious Architectural Award

The Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center has been awarded the 2006 Harleston Parker Medal by the Boston Society of Architects (BSA), which recognizes "the most beautiful piece of architecture, building, monument, or structure" built in the Greater Boston area in the past 10 years. The 10-member jury of architects and design professionals unanimously selected the Wang Center from among 150 nominated projects. In its commendation of the building, the jury wrote "...The many different internal spaces offer both warmth and hominess as well as breathtaking views of the adjacent wetland valley and woodlands and the more distant lake. Both interior and exterior details are clearly conceived and carefully executed.... the jury recognized that this building has the characteristics that evoke both wonder and delight in those who walk through or around it...."

Listen to Wellesley on the Web Via iTunes U

Do you wish you could hear Wellesley faculty lecture on their latest research or news of the day? Would you like to hear students talk about their internships or research? Wellesley has recently partnered with iTunes to provide free audio and video content of Wellesley events and projects to anyone with an Internet connection.

Among the current offerings are a recording by the Wellesley College Choir of the Alma Mater, a video of students performing a classical Indian dance in the Wellesley Association of South Asian Students' annual cultural show, an excerpt from Professor Martin Brody's 2006 Distinguished Faculty Lecture in which he uses a Beatles song to explore the study of music as a liberal art, and student presentations of their off-campus learning experiences from the Tanner Conference.

With iTunes U, users can download, view, and listen to audio, still images, and video of Wellesley events. You do not need an iPod or MP3 player to enjoy these offerings; you can listen or watch from your computer. If you like what you hear and see, you can subscribe to different channels of Wellesley content (e.g. lectures, student presentations) and your computer will download new content automatically each time we post something new.

To begin, go to Wellesley's iTunes page, http://itunes.wellesley.edu. If you do not have iTunes on your computer, you will be asked to download it before you can begin. The download is free.
