GUIDELINES FOR FULFILLING THE MULTICULTURAL REQUIREMENT

The Multicultural Requirement

All students must complete one unit of course work that focuses on:

• African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Latin American, Native American, or Pacific Island peoples, cultures, or societies; and/or

• a minority American culture, such as those defined by race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or physical ability; and/or

• the processes of racism, social or ethnic discrimination, or cross-cultural interaction.

Each student, in consultation with her Faculty Advisor, her departmental major or minor advisor, or her Class Dean, will choose a course to meet this requirement. Copies of the signed proposal should be submitted both to the Class Dean and to the Registrar's Office. The multicultural requirement may be satisfied with a course that also satisfies a distribution requirement. It may not be satisfied with a standard Writing 125 course; however, "combined" writing courses (e.g. WRIT 125/JPN 155) may possibly be used to fulfill the multicultural requirement.

Suggestions and Procedure

To assist students completing the multicultural requirement, the Committee on Curriculum and Instruction offers the following guidelines:

• Choose a course that interests you and that you believe could be used to fulfill the multicultural requirement. In thinking about what course you might take, cast a wide net: look through the College catalog, talk to other students about the courses they have taken, speak to instructors about the substance of the courses they teach.

• Have a conversation about this course with your Class Dean or advisor. Talk about why you are interested in this course and how this course relates to the rest of your academic program at Wellesley.

• A form to identify your choice is found at: http://www.wellesley.edu/Registrar/MulticulturalMemo.html.) Have your Class Dean or advisor sign and date the form indicating your choice. Submit the form to the Registrar. Give a copy of your signed form to your Class Dean.

• When you have successfully completed the course identified on the form (i.e., when you have received a passing grade in the course), the Registrar will certify that you have satisfied the multicultural requirement.
