Checklist for students planning to register for 360 (Senior Thesis Research) with the intent to pursue Honors in the major

  1. Identify a member of the department/program who is willing to supervise your thesis work and will serve as your thesis advisor. This will ordinarily occur in the spring of your junior year.

Signify your intent to the department chair/program director.

  1. Print a copy of your grade report and submit to the department chair/program director, Verify that your grades are sufficient to pursue departmental honors. Your GPA in the major including courses above the 100-level must be at least 3.5. (Some departments may require a higher GPA in the major.) Grades and courses outside of the major are only relevant in that they signal to advisors how much time you will have to work on your thesis and whether you have all necessary skills.

  1. If your GPA in the major falls between 3.0 and 3.5, the department/program may petition CCI on your behalf if they support you for honors work. These petitions must be filed no later than the third week of classes in the fall semester. Make sure that you have submitted all materials to the department/program in time for a petition. Note that some departments/programs may have earlier deadlines for petition. Check with your department/program to make sure you meet their deadline. Either your advisor or the department chair may file the petition.

  1. Obtain your advisor’s signature and register for 360 in your major. If your major is an interdepartmental one, be sure to register for 360 in that program, not the home department of your advisor.

  1. Consult your department/program about specific deadlines for forming a thesis committee, submission of chapters, and presentation of your work.

  1. By the end of January, departments/programs, in consultation with thesis advisors, should
decide whether 360 students may advance to 370.
Registration in 370 requires the signature of the advisor or department chair.
