Bates Hall

outside of Bates Hall

Bates Hall was built in 1953, part of what was then known as the "Orchard Halls" and what we now call the Eastside of campus (Glasscock). It was named in honor of Katherine Lee Bates, an 1880 alumna, as well as a longtime professor of English Literature. She is most famous for her composition of "America the Beautiful" which is sung each year at Wellesley's Commencement.
