McAfee Hall

outside of McAfee Hall

McAfee Hall is the newest hall on the Wellesley campus, built in 1961. Its construction insured that all students could, for the first time, live on campus. McAfee (pronounced MAC-uh-fee) was named in honor of our seventh president, Mildred McAfee Horton, who was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and also head of WAVES, the women's branch of the Navy, during WWII. Her likeness can be found in the Reference Room of Clapp Library. McAfee Hall has a special living room designed to mimic a medieval living space, complete with Flemish tapestries, a 15th century French fireplace, and a Goth ceiling from Wels, Austria (Glasscock).
