Shafer Hall, which completed the Hazard Quad, was built in 1909 and named in honor of Helen Shafer, our third president. Formerly a mathematics professor, Miss Shafer was president from 1887-1894, and, in her honor, the glass windows in the foyer contain mathematical symbols. It is a mirror image of its neighbor, Beebe, with the single exception that Shafer has a large rec room in place of a dining hall. Shafer is known as the building over which the American flag is always flown and overlooks Munger Meadow.
