Corporate and Foundation Grants
The following list is a sampling of institutional grants recently awarded to Wellesley College:

In August 2006, the George I. Alden Trust awarded Wellesley College a $150,000 grant for renovations to a chemistry laboratory and for the purchase of equipment for the chemistry department.

In June 2007, the Argosy Foundation made a $100,000 grant to the College to support the renovation of Houghton Memorial Chapel and the creation of an interfaith meditation room in the lower level of the chapel.

The BellSouth Corporation's Non-employee Board of Directors' Charitable Contribution Program (now a part of AT&T) made a five-year $250,000 grant in 2004 for support of the College's Mentoring in the Sciences Program. This program enables students who have an interest in but lack a strong background in the sciences to receive ongoing academic support and research opportunities during their first two years at Wellesley College.

Wellesley was selected in June 2007 to receive a three-year Beckman Scholars Program Award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. Supporting student research in Biological Sciences and Chemistry, this grant enables four Wellesley College students to undertake cutting edge scientific inquiry over a fifteen month period, which covers an academic year and the previous and subsequent summers.

In May 2006, the Davis Educational Foundation awarded Wellesley a three-year $235,000 grant to support the development and implementation of an introductory engineering experience for Wellesley College students created in partnership with the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.

Wellesley College has received a $150,000 grant from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation's Summer Stipend Program in the Sciences. The three-year grant will fund a total of thirty summer research positions for rising sophomores and juniors--allowing more Wellesley College students to engage in scientific research early in their academic careers.

Wellesley is in the final two years of a $1.5 million grant awarded by the Freeman Foundation to support the College's Asian Studies program and the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department.

In 2004, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded Wellesley College a $1.2 million four-year grant to support various aspects of the College's science program. This award was the fifth such award from the institute since 1988.

The Korea Foundation made a three-year grant of $218,905 in July 2006 in support of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures' Korean program. Through the foundation's generosity, Wellesley was able to hire a new Assistant Professor in Korean Languages and Literatures.

In December 2005, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded $422,000 to Barnard College to support a collaboration with Wellesley College. With this five-year grant, Wellesley will continue to provide professional development awards to faculty members seeking opportunities to research in new content areas, and to work with colleagues from Barnard College to examine interdisciplinary programs at both campuses and to create case studies in critical new interdisciplinary fields.
In February 2007, Wellesley College was selected by the Merck Institute for Science Education and the American Association for the Advancement of Science for a Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program Award. This three-year $60,000 grant is enabling the College to implement an interdisciplinary summer research fellowship program for twelve talented students majoring in the biological sciences, chemistry or biological chemistry.

The Starr Foundation annually augments two endowed scholarship funds which the foundation established at the College many years ago. The C.V. Starr Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial aid support to international students, and the Starr Foundation Endowment Fund for Continuing Education provides scholarships for students enrolled in the Elisabeth Kaiser Davis Degree Program.

The I.N. and Susanna H. Van Nuys Foundation created an endowed Library Fund at the College in 1950. Each year, this foundation adds approximately $80,000 to this special fund, which provides ongoing support to the Margaret Clapp Library, the Book Arts Laboratory, and the Annis Press.
