I was born and raised in Saratoga, California, and fell in love with Russian music while making my way through Saratoga High School. Though I was an English major at Pomona College in the early 1980s, Russian language infected me there, and Russian literature seduced me soon thereafter. After bidding farewell to my college baseball career, I did my graduate work at Oxford and Stanford, where I developed a specialty in nineteenth-century Russian literature and music. I finished my Ph.D. in the spring of 1992 and moved on to Wellesley to begin teaching that fall. Over the years here I've taught just about every course the Russian Department offers, though now I focus on elementary Russian language and nineteenth-century Russian novels and poems. At Wellesley I've chaired the department frequently and I've been longtime faculty advisor to the Russian Club, advised lots of theses and Russian majors, co-founded the Lake Baikal course , co-developed Pesnia music-based language-learning software with marvelous student assistants, and supported Wellesley College athletics.

In my precious spare time, I love relaxing with my family: my wife, Caroline, who teaches the Religious Studies Department at College of the Holy Cross; our son, PJ; our daughter, Anastasia; and Lucy the Wonderdog. I also enjoy commuting on my bike, cooking, catch-and-release fly-fishing (on the Deschutes and Lake Waban), fly-tying, birdwatching, canoeing, hiking, camping, and playing squash.
