Storm Water Pollution Prevention ProgramGeneral Information
Stormwater runoff is generated when precipitation from rain and snowmelt events flows over land or impervious surfaces and does not percolate into the ground.As the runoff flows over the land or impervious surfaces (paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops), it accumulates debris, chemicals, sediment or other pollutants. These materials are then transported to nearby streams and rivers, causing water quality issues that affect us all.
Best Management Practices
The primary method to control stormwater discharges is the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs).Regulations:
Stormwater regulations and guidelines exist under federal, state and sometimes local authorities. Typically discharges are organized by: 1) municipal, 2) construction activities, and 3) industrial activities.Federal – US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
