STALEY FELLOWSHIP

ROBERTA DEY STALEY AND KARL A. STALEY FELLOWSHIP
FOR CANCER-RELATED RESEARCH AT WELLESLEY COLLEGE

Initiated in summer 1993, the Roberta Dey Staley and Karl A. Staley Fellowships provide support for cancer-related research at Wellesley College. Staley Fellowships are granted to tenured and tenure-track members of the Wellesley College faculty, full-time and regular part-time, who are engaged in research directly related to cancer. Non-tenure-track faculty are not eligible. The purposes of the Fellowship are:

· to provide enabling aid for a researcher's progress,
· to support research on site, and
· to provide opportunities for Wellesley undergraduates to participate in the research process.

Support will be granted for research in a cancer-related area. The Fellowship is seen primarily as critical enabling aid, to make possible a significant advance in the experimenter's research. The Fellowship is not designed to support the preparation of prior research results for publication, curricular development, or the writing of text-books as primary objectives. Applicants may request Fellowship support to supplement current grants.

The application should describe the ways in which the Fellowship will provide significant impetus to the research of the recipient and describe how the research will contribute to the education of Wellesley students.

Applications should be of a quality comparable to those submitted for outside support, although the description of the research should be directed to a general scientific audience and be less extensively presented. Clarity of presentation will be an important asset.

Wellesley faculty members are eligible if they intend to spend at least two years after the Fellowship tenure at Wellesley College, and are actively engaged in teaching full-time or regular part-time at the College. Past recipients of the award are eligible for support of cancer research, although they may receive lower priority in the decision process if fewer than 5 years have passed since their previous Fellowship. Awards may be prorated in accord with appointment contract. Salary and summer stipends will be prorated in accord with appointment contract; regular part-time faculty are not eligible for released time.

Selection:

The selection of Fellows will be made by the Dean of the College in consultation with the Brachman Hoffman Committee, which is chaired by the Faculty Director of the Science Center. Other members of this Committee include the Director of Sponsored Research and five faculty members elected from the Science Center. When appropriate, the Committee membership will be extended by the Dean of the College to include faculty representatives from other curricular areas of the College.

The criteria for selection include the quality of the proposal, the potential for continuation of the research project at Wellesley after the Fellowship tenure, and the potential involvement of undergraduates in the research process. Applicants may be interviewed.

Conditions:

The application deadline is January 22, 2007. Awards will be announced early in spring semester. The Chair of the department must approve requests for released time in writing.

The award is in an amount of up to $40,000 over two years; ordinarily no more than $25,000 can be budgeted for any one year. The Committee and the Dean of the College must receive a progress report before the second year funds will be released.

Fellowship tenure will start June 1 of the year of selection. Recipients will be expected to give a public presentation of their research accomplishments at the conclusion of their Fellowship tenure.

Faculty members going on leave, either junior or sabbatical leave, are encouraged to apply for Fellowships. The Fellowship may be used to support research while on leave, provided that the work takes place on campus. The Fellowship application should supplement (rather than substitute for) applications sent to outside agencies.

Support Provided:

Staley Fellowship awards are made for items of direct expense essential to the plan of the recipient. It is the Fellow's prerogative to determine the appropriate use of the award, which will be administered by Wellesley College.

The following are possible ways in which the funds may be used:

  • Released time from teaching (up to one unit per year). The cost for a released unit is available from the Office of the Dean of the College (currently $7,000).
  • Research assistance: post-doctoral, pre-doctoral, technically-trained, clerical, or untrained laboratory assistance. Fringe benefits for salaried assistants must be included in the budget. The College fringe benefit rate is available in the Science Center Office.
  • Summer salary stipends for Fellow (up to $7500/year) and / or research students. The costs for student summer stipends and student housing allowances are available in the Science Center Office.
  • Attendance at professional meetings for Fellow and / or research students.
  • Use of specialized instrumentation or facilities unavailable at the College.
  • Expendable supplies.
  • Specialized library needs.
  • Note: Ordinarily, these funds are not available for the purchase of capital equipment (defined as equipment with a lasting life of more than a year and costing more than $1000). Exceptions to this policy will be considered, however. Computer purchases are allowed provided that the applicant gives a detailed justification, explaining in what way the item is integral to the research project (e.g., it interfaces with a piece of experimental apparatus, is essential for data collection, or is needed to perform calculations or simulations for which existing computing capacity is insufficient). Ordinarily, the purchase of a laptop computer for the sole purpose of travel or convenience is not permitted.

Budget:

It is expected that the recipient will adhere to the budget as proposed except for changes agreed to by the Faculty Director of the Science Center and approved by the Dean. Funds are available for expenditure only during the tenure of the Fellowship; any funds remaining at the end of the Fellowship are returned.

Salary for summer research is authorized but may not exceed 2/9 of the recipient's academic salary of any one year, or $7500, whichever is less. The College is responsible for the regular academic salary (except for released time units) and fringe benefits for the Fellow based upon regular academic salary. Any request for released teaching units must be supported by your Department Chair and cleared with the Dean of the College. Indicate in writing that this is the case. Requests for salaried research assistants must also include fringe benefits.

Final Report:

A full written report must be submitted to the Dean of the College with a copy to the Committee's files within 90 days of termination of the Fellowship. The report should include a summary of the work accomplished and a budget account.
