• How do I get support for students' research-related expenses during the academic year?
• What if I want my student to present a paper at a conference?
• What if I want to design a new course or do revisions on an existing one?
• What if I want a summer research student?
• What if I want a student to work during the summer on a curricular development project?
• What if I need a small amount of money for my own research?
• What if I am changing the direction of my research and need major funding?

How do I get support for students’ research-related expenses during the academic year?

--Hughes funds ($300/semester) are available for 350, 360/370 and students in the FY/Sophomore Mentoring Program. See Mary Hogan or Adele Wolfson to make sure that you have an activity code for eligible students. Mass Space Grant Consortium funds may also be used for students in space-related fields.

--There are several possibilities for student travel. Each of these will generally cover up to $400 of expenses per student:

• If the work to be presented occurred during summer research in Chemistry or Biology, NSF-REU grants in those departments may be used for travel. See Chris Arumainayagam for Chemistry and Dennis Smith for Biology.
• If both student and mentor are attending the meeting, funding is available from the College’s NSF-AIRE. See Pat Bois in the Deans Office or : http://www.wellesley.edu/DeanCollege/NSFAIRE/nsfgrant.html
• The Dean of the College has student travel grants: http://www.wellesley.edu/DeanCollege/studgrants/studgrnt.html
• The Friends of Horticulture offer small grants for travel related to plant science: http://www.wellesley.edu/ScienceCenter/grants/studenttravel.html#friends
• The Hughes award will supplement other sources of travel money.
• Mass Space Grant Consortium funds may also be used for students in space-related fields.

• The Friends of Horticulture have small grants, up to $200, for classroom activities for plant-related courses: http://www.wellesley.edu/ScienceCenter/grants/foh.html

• Faculty in Biological Sciences and Chemistry should check with their REU directors that their research projects are updated and listed as available for the coming summer.
• Other faculty members should discuss research possibilities with students or through department programs.

• Apply for a Hughes curricular development grant and request a supplement for a student stipend (total award not to exceed $5000):
