At Wellesley, science courses take students from the edge of the universe to the center of the atom, from the exploration of the human brain to the design of artificial intelligence, and from the origins of life to the frontiers of biotechnology. Formal majors in eight different departments (Astronomy, Biological Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology) are complemented by interdepartmental majors in Astrophysics, Biological Chemistry, Cognitive Science, and Neuroscience. In addition, a Wellesley student is free to design her own independent major in cooperation with faculty in at least two different departments. Popular recent majors have included Environmental Science, Biophysics and Paleobiology. Beyond these classes on campus, Wellesley students are eligible to take any of the hundreds of science courses offered by the nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Olin College of Engineering.

The Science Center is very well equipped for student and faculty research. There is modern instrumentation for virtually every application. Most science majors perform original and independent research in the laboratory of a faculty member. Many of our alumnae in science cite undergraduate research with a faculty member as the single most influential factor in their own choice of career.

Wellesley has an outstanding record of science graduates who go on to graduate school in the sciences. Many students also prepare for medical and other health-related professional schools. A high percentage of Wellesley's students applying to medical school are admitted. In summary, support for the Sciences and science majors at Wellesley is unsurpassed.
