Research and Teaching Areas
This year at Wellesley I will be teaching Sociology of Film and Globalization in the Fall and Comparative Popular Culture, Media and Communications and Race and Ethnicity in the Spring. My most recent work has been on popular culture, cinema and media. My dissertation, an ethnography of movie-going, explored the reception and public culture of popular cinema in South India within a comparative frame. I am currently revising the manuscript for publication as well as working on a project on transnationalism and popular media. Another longterm interest is social inequality, gender and ethnicity. For my masters thesis I examined the interaction between domestic workers and their employers based on fieldwork in Los Angeles and with an implicit comparison to domestic service in India.
