Course Description:
This course examines the literary and cultural production of the three Hispanic (or Spanish-speaking) Caribbean countries, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba.  It analyzes a cross-section of literary genres (i.e., essay, poetry, short story, etc.) while also combining the study of popular culture and film.  The course is separated into three segments that study the nations individually, yet connections are drawn between them based on observations pertaining to the genres, themes, and writers.  The course proposes the examination of critical arguments and theories pertaining to the meanings of the “Caribbean” as a geography, region, and historical area, while also considering some theoretical questions that establish repetitions, similarities, and differences between these countries.

The primary course objective is to expand and perfect Spanish-language proficiency within a cultural context.  The class dually strives to create intellectually loaded discussions pertaining to fictional and theoretical readings, while accomplishing the development of critical thinking, literary and cultural analysis.

Although most course materials are in Spanish, a couple of theoretical and critical research articles have been written (and will be read) in English.  However, all course discussions and class assignments are in Spanish.  Students should make use of dictionaries and Spanish–language literary guides in order to be successfully prepared.
